Geoffrey de Havilland built the Comet in 1934 to enter the England-Australia air race for the MacRobertson Trophy, held to celebrate the centenary of the state of Victoria. Three of the aircraft entered the race and one, named Grosvenor House, won it.
Completing the trio of de Havilland’s Comet Racers, the red aircraft, named Grovesnor House, was the winner of the MacRobertson Air Race between RAF Mildenhall in the UK to Melbourne, Australia. The official flight time was 71 hours 18 seconds.
