LZ77 was painted black overall as a night time camouflage. The darker patch represents the open-weave fabric on the top of the envelope to allow leaking hydrogen to escape. Painting the top black meant that the whole airship overheated and the lifting gas expanded in sunlight and was automatically vented causing the airship to lose height so later airships had this panel left unpainted.
