The E boats had a great advantage over RN MTB's & MGB's in that they were powered by diesel engines and could therefore stand more punishment (the RN craft had a tendency to catch fire and were much smaller and lighter). But the E boats were very expensive and difficult to build. The Kriegsmarine could never get enough of them so they were never able to fulfill their potential.
