In the thirties international motorcycle road racing was dominated by the Norton name. In the first post-war motorcycle world championship Norton triumphed immediately with 44 Grand Prix wins and the Manx Norton became one of the all time great successes of mototcycling race history. Modifications such as the double loop tubular "featherbed frame" with a hydraulic shock-absorber strut on the rear wheelproved world beating. The trademark of this spartan machine with a dry weight of 150 kg was an unmistakable exhaust that looked and sounded like a magaphone, with a flattened underside that gave it a good slanting position. The motorbike delivered 37.5 bhp at 6,200 rpm. A double world championship was won on the Manx for the first time in motorcycle GP history.
