WBritain 1/32 American Civil War Union Surgery Set (31075)
Surgery was performed in open air whenever possible, to take advantage of daylight, which was brighter than candles or kerosene lamps available in the field.Though medical professionals of that time knew wounds healed better in clean conditions, they were not as aware of germs as they are today. The surgery table was not cleaned as a rule between soldiers, until it became so bloody the patient was in danger of sliding off. Surgical tools were "washed" off in buckets of bloody water left over from the previous patients. Water buckets were refilled only when absolutely necessary

WBritain 1/32 Washington crossing the Delaware 6 pce set (17229)
Washington's crossing of the Delaware River, occurred on December 25, 1776 during the American Revolutionary War, was the first move in a planned surprise attack organized by "George Washington" against the Hessian forces in "Trenton, New Jersey" Planned in secrecy, Washington led a column of Continental Army troops across the icy "Delaware River" in a challenging and potentially dangerous operation. Other planned crossings in support of the operation were either called off or ineffective, but this did not prevent Washington from successfully surprising and defeating the troops of Johann Rall quartered in Trenton. The army crossed the river back to Pennsylvania, this time burdened by prisoners and military stores taken as a result of the battle.Washington's army then crossed the river a third time at the end of the year, under conditions made more difficult by the uncertain thickness of the ice on the river. They defeated British reinforcements Lord Cornwallis on January 2nd, 1777, and defeated his rear guard at Princetown before retreating to winter quarters in Morristown , New Jersey

The 54th Massachusetts Regiment was the first black regiment recruited in the North. Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the 25 year old son of very wealthy abolitionist parents, was chosen to command. Their first conflict with Confederate soldiers came on July 16, when the regiment repelled an attack on James Island. But on July 18 came the supreme test of the courage and valor of the black soldiers; they were chosen to lead the assault on Battery Wagner,a Confederate fort on Morris Island at Charleston. In addressing his soldiers before leading them in charge across the beach, Colonel Shaw said, "I want you to prove yourselves. The eyes of thousands will look on what you do tonight."
