Defending the access to Quatre Bras the 42nd's Highlanders withstood a cavalry charge while still in line, and forming the square while under attack! The formation changed so quickly that many French lancers where trapped inside the square, cut off from their comrades by angry Highlanders. The fight was raging both inside and outside the square, in a whirlpool of pipes screeching and horses neighing, men screaming and muskets firing.Nevertheless, the Black Watch square held. The lighthorsemen were finally driven away, after having seen the frightening sight of their comrades bodies and, from time to time, even of their horses hauled out of the square over the Scotsmen's heads
