Class 57 locomotives were created from class 47 locomotive bodyshells and trucks with new EMD 12-cylinder 645 series engines allied to alternators recovered from withdrawn class 56 locos and refurbished traction motors. The class 57/3 variants were rebuilt for Virgin Trains and equipped with electric train supply for hauling passenger services.
