Construction of the Class 50's, by the English Electric company at Vulcan Foundry, Newton Le Willows took place between February 1966 and October 1967. Used initially on the West Coast main line north from Crewe to Glasgow and Edinburgh, they often ran double headed to make the most of their 100 mph capability. They were an impressive sight 'hoovering' up Shap with a heavy train.
