In the 1920s the New York Central had the largest railway network in the USA. To enable them to haul long trains with up to 18 passenger carriages more efficiently, the Chief Engineer P. Kiefer initiated the building of a new class locomotives that would ultimately be known as the "Hudson". The first of 275 locos for the N.Y. Central arrived on 14.2.1927 and developed into the best-known locomotive class in the world. A total of 487 Hudsons were built and used, not only in the USA, but also in Canada. In the early 1950s this type was finally replaced by diesel locomotives.
