Starting in 1936, the 41 Class was developed within the framework of the building programme for standard locomotives of the East German State Railways. By 1941 the German loco works had produced 366 of the 1900 psi, 161.4 ton BR 41s. The 41 Class was a multi-purpose loco. It was designed to be used on main lines and branch lines with a light superstructure. It had a maximum speed of 90 km/h that enabled it to be used for hauling both fast and express trains. During the post-war period both German railway systems rebuilt and reconditioned many BR 41 locomotives, thus enabling them to remain in service.
