After the Battle of Britain, the development of the Spitfire continued and new improvements were added to the design. The result was the Mk.V series, which became the most widely produced Spitfire variant. The Mk.V featured a more powerful Merlin 45 engine and 3 different armaments, although by far the most numerous was the Mk.Vb with two 20mm cannon and 4 7.7mm machine guns. It was this Mk.Vb version that formed the backbone of the RAF fighter force during the middle years of WWII, serving on all fronts.
