The Type 45s are primarily air defense destroyers, capable of defending against both aircraft and missile attack, whose mission is to shield the Fleet from air attack. Designed to replace the Royal Navys venerable Type 42 destroyers (which entered service between 1975 and 1983)  the original plan to order 12 ships as a one for one replacement was, controversially, reduced to a final order for 6 ships due to budget constraints and cost overruns. With a displacement of 8,500 tons the Daring class are the largest destroyers ever built for the Royal Navy and the first Royal Navy warships constructed to Lloyds Register Naval Ship Rules. They are also the first Royal Navy ships to be designed and built with gender neutral crew accommodation with six person cabins for junior crew members and individual cubicles instead of communal shower and toilet facilities. For air defense the ships are equipped with PAAMS (Principal Anti Air Missile System), designated Sea Viper by the Royal Navy, which comprises the Sampson Multi Function Radar the S1850M Long Range Early Warning Radar a computerized Automatic Command & Control System a 48 cell A50 Sylver Vertical Launch System (VLS) a combination of Aster 15 (range 30+ km) and Aster 30 (range 120 km) missiles The Sea Viper system can track 2,000+ targets simultaneously while at the same time controlling / guiding up to 16 missiles which can be launched from the Sylver VLS at a rate of 8 missiles in 10 seconds. The Aster missiles are designed to engage and destroy a wide variety of targets including aircraft, UAVs, supersonic cruise missiles and sea skimming anti-ship missiles - the Aster 15 can engage targets at ranges of between 1.7 and 30+ kilometres and altitudes of up to 13 kilometres (13,000 metres) while the Aster 30 can engage targets at ranges of between 3 and 120 kilometres and altitudes of up to 20 kilometres (20,000 metres). The Daring Class are also equipped with a 4.5in Mark 8 main gun (for Naval Gunfire Support) and with Oerlikon 30mm anti-aircraft guns and GE Vulcan Phalanx 20mm CIWS for close in defense. In addition the ships are fitted for but not with two RGM-84 Harpoon missile launchers and four of the ships are expected to be fitted with Harpoon launchers re-cycled from the Type 22 Batch 3 frigates which were scrapped in 2013. For anti-submarine warfare the ships operate either an AW101 Merlin or two (2) Westland Lynx helicopters both of which are equipped with dipping sonar and armed with Sting Ray torpedoes. The flight deck is capable of handling aircraft up to the size of the Boeing Chinook. The Daring Class are fitted with an integrated electric propulsion (IEP) system designed to provide a high quality AC (instead of DC) power supply for all of the ships propulsion and general electrical requirements. Power is supplied by two Rolls Royce WR-21 gas turbines and two Wartsila 12VF200 diesel generators which provide a 4,160 volt high voltage supply that is used to directly power the two Converteam induction motors which each produce 27,000 shp and are capable of driving the ship at speeds in excess of 30 knots with a range of 7,000 nautical miles. The high voltage supply is stepped down to 440 volts / 115 volts for the ships general electrical requirements through the use of transformers. Tri-ang Minic Ships produces individual models of all six Type 45s complete with appropriate Pennant Numbers, Flight Deck markings and Deck Codes. The models are marked on the underside with the Tri-ang Minic logo, the model number P 755, "Royal Navy Modern Edition", and the description "Type 45 Daring Class Destroyer".
