The City of Durban was a third generation 2436 TEU capacity container ship designed and built by the A G Weser yards at Bremen, West Germany in 1977 for Ellerman and Harrison Lines. Operation was on the Europe - South Africa service under the Ellerman City Lines banner until 1983 when the ship was chartered by OCL and renamed "Portland Bay". She operated on the Europe - Australia / NZ service for a year under OCL management until returning to Ellerman City Lines and reverting to "City of Durban" in 1984. In 1986 she was transferred to the Associated Container Transport (ACT) consortium, of which Ellerman and Harrison Lines were founding members, and renamed "ACT 8". Repainted in ACT livery she operated on the Europe - Australia / NZ service for five years until 1991 when she again reverted to Ellerman City Lines as "City of Durban". The ship was renamed "Pegasus Bay" in 1996 following P&O's acquisition of Ellerman Lines interest in the ACT consortium in 1991 and became part of the P&O Nedlloyd fleet following the 1998 acquisition of Harrison Lines interest in the ACT consortium. She remained in service under the P&O Nedlloyd banner until 2002 when she was scrapped at Zhenjiang in China.
