Nimitz was laid down on the 22nd June 1968 at Newport News Shipbuilding and commissioned on the 3rd May 1975. The ship was named for the WWII Pacific fleet commander, Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz.

As from 16th March 2007 Michael Manazir assumed command of the Nimitz. A total of 90 fixed and rotary wing aircraft can be carried.
