In 2002 Mercedes introduced a car that was, externally at least, completely new. The V8 engine with a capacity of about 452 bhp packed an even bigger punch, the front wheel suspension had been considerably improved. However in the DTM season much more dynamic impetus was provided by the firm intention of Bernd Schneiders to complete the hat trick following his successes in 2000 and 2001. The 2002 season therefore promised some extremely interesting duels. Mercedes and Bernd Schneider in particular, having won twice, were absolute favourites defending their title. First of all Schneider had to overcome the strong dominance of the Audi TTs and join attle over the placings. By the end of the year Schneider had obviously caught up, secured the position for Mercedes and ended the 2002 season as runner up to the champion.
