At the beginning of the 90s the Volkswagen designers developed a design study called the "Concept 1" which was shown at the Detroit Motor Show in 1994. Unanimous opinion: this car must be mass-produced. So a very special new Volkswagen saw the light of day. The New Beetle was likewise exhibited at the Detroit Motor Show on 5th January 1998 and was delivered in the USA in March with great success. Since Autumn 1998 the Beetle has also delighted buyers in Europe. The New Beetle has front wheel drive and a four cylinder engine which can be ordered as a 115 hp petrol or a 90 hp turbo Diesel engine. Maximum speed: 171 km/h. The New Beetle with its original design, latest technology and excellent quality has captured the heart of the world public.
