Peugeot opened the 2004 season with the new 307. Their new World Rally Car is the successor to the successful 206 WRC, with which Peugeot returned to the world championship in 1999 and then proceeded to take the Constructors' World Title three times in succession in the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. The second works team comprises the Belgian Freddy Loix and Sven Smeets. Loix, born in 1970, began his rallying career back in 1993. The Belgian soon proved that he was a force to be reckoned with, including in 2002 in Sweden when he battled his way to a place on the podium despite a broken leg. He raced for the first time for Peugeot in 2003 and permanently in 2004. In the very first race of the season at Monte Carlo he gained 4 points.
