Thrilling races, many spectators on the spot and watching TV - the DTM has established itself as one of Europe's top touring car series. The conditions of "German Touring Car Masters" are no less concerned with high performance than with attractive racing cars. In 2002 Opel introduced six completely newly developed Astra V8 coupés. The greatest evolutionary steps taken by the 2002 car were in the areas of rigidity and aerodynamics. In addition to a completely redesigned tubular frame cell, the engine was integrated into the overall structure of the DTM coupé as a joint load-bearing element. The driveability and response of the 462 bhp 4 litre V8 engine were alsoptimised. Starting for the Opel Team Phoenix: Manuel Reuter, with 40 years experience on the starting grid, Le Mans winner in 1989 and 1996, ITC/DTM Champion in 1996 and DTM runner-up in 2000. In his tenth year as Opel works driver Manuel piloted the car in the new Opel CI design.
