Dapol OO GWR 2839 Fruit D Express Fruit Van GWR 4F-014-013

Dapol OO Gauge 4F-014-013 GWR 2839 Fruit D express fruit van GWR brown.

Fruit D wagons were large ventilated wooden bodied vans designed for the fast and efficient transportation of fruit. They were first constructed in the 1930?s for use by GWR and later in the 1950?s by BR. The vans themselves had three large double side doors for fast unloading and loading and were usually seen as part of passenger or fast goods trains. Out of season these vans were used as parcel or luggage vans. As road transport took over as the principal way of transporting fruit, fruit D vans were converted and used as permanent parcels or stores vans and remained in service in this way into the 1980?s.

The Dapol model of the fruit D van features:

  • Highly detailed body moulding
  • Profiled wheels
  • NEM pockets with self centring couplings
  • Accurately applied livery

Hornby Railways OO Gauge R6735 SR Bulleid Design Cattle Wagon

Expected September 2016

Following his appointment as Chief mechanical Engineer of the Southern Railway OVS Bulleid set about modernising many aspects of the companys' locomotive and rolling stock fleet. The SRs cattle wagon design was quite new, but noticable changes to the design were a change to sheet plywood ends and moving the hand brake lever to the very end of the wagon where the handle was less exposed to animal products draining through the side slats.
Cattle wagons travelled widely across the British rail network, so the added variety of this Southern wagon is a welcome addition to the range of highly detailed wagons produced by Hornby in recent years.

Bachmann OO SR 25 Ton Brake Van Brown with White Roof & Red Ends 38-400A

Bachmann Branchline OO 38-400A SR 25 Ton Pill Box Brake Van SR Brown

Sometimes known as Pill Box vans these guards brake vans were designed for the Southern Railway in the 1930s, showing the steady development from the short wheelbase brake vans of earlier years towards the familiar BR standard design of the 1950s. The longer wheelbase (distance between the axles) provided a better ride for the guard, also allowing an increase in the weight and therefore effectiveness of the hand brake. Side lookout duckets allowed the guard to keep an eye on the running of the train and to watch for signals which may need him to apply the brake to help bring the train to a halt.

This model is painted in the Southern Railway goods brown livery with white roof and red painted ends.

These wagons were often throughly cleansed ready for use on the express fruit and vegetable trains from the South West during the annual harvest and later, following a decline in demand for cattle wagons, a number had the open slats boarded in and full height doors fitted for permanent allocation to the fruit and vegatables services.

This model of the GWR cattle wagon shows further modifications made, with van style doors and planked-over upper panels, converting these wagons more permanently into fruit vans.

Oxford Rail OO LNER 6 Plank Open Merchandise Wagon LNER Grey OR76MW6001
Oxford Rail OO Gauge OR76MW6001 LNER 6 Plank Open Merchandise Wagon LNER Grey
The LNER constructed a slightly larger 6 plank bodied open wagon for general merchandise service, in place of the 5 plank body favoured by LMS and GWR companies. The LNER design used the RCH wood chassis far longer than the other companies who changed to the stronger steel frame design, resulting in the LNER wagons being quite easily identifyable. This model from Oxford Rail provides modellers with a good and detailed model of these LNER wagons for the first time.

Bachmann Branchline OO Gauge 37-087 GWR 7 Plank End Door Open Coal Wagon

An excellent model of the classic 7-plank open coal wagon with end door for rapid unloading painted in the GWR's dark goods grey livery. These wagons were popular with colliery companies as the end doors allowed rapid discharge into ships.

The GWR used iron and steel underframes for their own wagons from around 1880, however this wooden framed wagon carries a 0 prefixed number, indicating it isn't a GWR owned wagon. The three Gloucester RCW plates along the solebar indicate this is a wagon from the Gloucester wagon companys' lease fleet on hire to the GWR, possibly pending the completion of an order from the Great Western.

Bachmann OO WD Warflat Bogie Flat Wagon Khaki Drab with Tank 38-725

Bachmann Branchline OO Gauge 38-725 War Department Warflat tank carrier bogie flat wagon. Painted khaki drab with tank load.

    New model announced 2013.

A new model of the War Department Warflat bogie flat wagon designed to convey heavy military vehicles during WW2. Using heavy fishbelly side framing loads up to 50 tons could be carried, including many of the light tanks and infantry support vehicles. The wagons featured screw jacks under the headstocks, allowing heavy vehicles to be driven on from an end loading dock and tracked vehicles could easily cross from one wagon to the next, driving down the entire length of a train.

Being substantially built these vehicles continued in service after WW2. BR examples were used to convey heavy loads, including large steel fabrications and castings. The MoD retained many wagons for military use, with a small fleet being rebuilt and updated with modern bogies, fittings and air brakes in the 1980s.

This model is painted in wartime khaki drab and supplied with a model tank load.

Container service allowed railway and haulage companies to transport goods from door to door without needing to re-load the goods between road vehicles and railway vans. Using a combination of flat-bed road vehicles and these con(tainer)flat wagons the container was lifted from the collecting road vehicle onto container onto the wagon at the nearest railway station. Moved by rail to the destination station the container was again lifted onto a road vehicle for final delivery.

Containers had been in use for furniture removals since the early 1900s, by the 1930s all of the four principal railway companies offered containers for removals.

Dapol OO GWR 20-Ton Steel Bodied Open Coal Wagon 4F-038-005

The GWR was a great promoter of larger capacity wagons in the 1930s, by which time the company already had many of these 20-ton capacity wagons in their own service as both 'traffic' or locomotive coal wagons and leased wagons to several South Wales collieries.

The GWR offered lower rates per ton on coal in 20-ton wagons, but with receiving facilities built on the basis of 10-ton wagons only larger customers (gas works, power stations etc.) could efficiently deal with 20-ton loads. BR later compromised, standardising on a 16-ton capacity wagon.

Dapol have updated the chassis to incorporate NEM coupler pockets.

Oxford Rail OO LNER 6 Plank Open Merchandise Wagon LNER Grey E139522 OR76MW6001B
Oxford Rail OO Gauge OR76MW6001B LNER 6 Plank Open Merchandise Wagon LNER Grey
The LNER constructed a slightly larger 6 plank bodied open wagon for general merchandise service, in place of the 5 plank body favoured by LMS and GWR companies. The LNER design used the RCH wood chassis far longer than the other companies who changed to the stronger steel frame design, resulting in the LNER wagons being quite easily identifyable. This model from Oxford Rail provides modellers with a good and detailed model of these LNER wagons for the first time.

Oxford Rail OO GWR Toad Brake Van GWR 6 Wheel Planked Sides (Early) Swindon OR76TOA001

Oxford Rail OO Gauge OR76TOA001 GWR 6 Wheel Toad Goods Trains Brake Van Planked Sides GWR Grey Early Lettering Swindon

These heavy 6-wheel brake vans were built for use on the heaviest goods trains and for steeply graded routes, providing greater weight and an additional braked axle under the control of the guard. Although the Great Western later standardised with a 4-wheel brake van the 6-wheel vans remained in service until the end of the steam era.
Oxford Rail have designed their model to incorporate several of the changes made to these vans over their long lives, this model finished in early condition with fully planked sides and veranda. The van is finished in the early (pre-1930s) lettering style with large G W prominent on the side of the van.

Swindon was a major centre for GWR goods trains operation, with trains from the Midlands via the Gloucester route converging with the coal and steel trains from South Wales. Trains were shunted and made up for many destinations here, in addition to the assembly of empty trains back to the coal mines. As a result Swindon allocated brake vans would be found in all corners of the GWR network.

Oxford Rail OO Gauge OR76TOA002 GWR 6 Wheel Toad Goods Trains Brake Van Plated Sides GWR Goods Grey 1930s Small Lettering Bridport RU

Oxford Rail have designed their model to incorporate several of the changes made to these vans over their long lives, this model having the steel side and veranda sheathing added to most GWR brake vans to strengthen and improve the damage resistance of the body.

This model replicates a van in the later small sized GWR lettering adopted in the 1930s and is a van allocated to the Bridport branch, the RU indicating Restricted Use to show that the van has allocated duties and should not be used in general service. The vans' duties might well involve some use over the mainline travelling to and from the Bridport line with trains connecting to other parts of the GWR network.

Oxford Diecast OO Gauge Warwell A 50-Ton Wagon Ministry of War Well Wagon Transport MS1 OR76WW001

A detailed model of the depressed centre Warwell wagons built during WW2 to carry tanks and other military vehicles between the factories and west coast importing ports to the embarkation ports along the south coast for shipment to France. The depressed centre well was needed to keep the vehicles inside the restricted British loading gauge, but the wagons were built with sloping end ramps and bridge plates so vehicles could be driven along the length of a train for rapid loading and unloading.
Following the invasion many of these wagons were transferred to France to keep the advancing front line supplied with replacement armoured vehicles, which would often have a low maximum road speed.

This model is finished as a wagon on loan from the War Department to the Great Western during and following the build-up to Operation Overload.
