Container service allowed railway and haulage companies to transport goods from door to door without needing to re-load the goods between road vehicles and railway vans. Using a combination of flat-bed road vehicles and these con(tainer)flat wagons the container was lifted from the collecting road vehicle onto container onto the wagon at the nearest railway station. Moved by rail to the destination station the container was again lifted onto a road vehicle for final delivery.

Containers had been in use for furniture removals since the early 1900s, by the 1930s all of the four principal railway companies offered containers for removals.

Bachmann OO GWR 8-Ton Cattle Wagon GWR Goods Grey (37-711B)

The GWR cattle wagon changed little during the 20th century, being a much more modern design compared to the other companies cattle wagons when it was first built. The GWR design was adopted almost unaltered by British Railways as the standard cattle wagon, sllowing this model of the GWR wagon to represent the BR type as well.

This model carries the GWR goods grey livery with the late 1930s small style of lettering.

Dapol OO GWR 20-ton Steel Open Coal Wagon (B712)

The GWR used 20-ton open weagons for locomotive coal from the early 20th century. In the 1930s many more were built and the GWR promoted the use of these wagons widely with collieries, large consumers and? coal traders.

This model is painted in the GWR's dark grey goods livery with the small GW lettering in the bottom left corner. This lettering scheme was introduced in the mid-1930's.

The large GWR Fruit D express fruit van is returning with improved tooling. This model is painted in the GWRs' brown livery with 1934 roundel or shirtbutton logo.

These large 4-wheel vans were introduced in the late 1930's for express delivery of fresh fruit and could be conveyed by many passenger train services. Although designed as ventilated fruit vans the vents could easily be closed and the Fruit D was frequently used as a parcels and luggage van.

This open coal wagon, equiped with an end door, carries the LMS goods grey livery, complete with bodyside diagonal stripe intended to allow tipper operators to quickly identify which end the door was.

Dapol OO GWR Loco Coal 20-Ton Steel Open Wagon (B770)

The GWR was a great promoter of larger capacity wagons in the 1930s, by which time the company already had many of these 20-ton capacity wagons in their own service.

The 20-ton loco coal wagon is very useful for GWR modelers. These could be sent singly to country depots, supplying a weeks' worth of coal for branchline locomotives, or formed into longer trains to supply a major shed which might empty several of them every day.

Dapol have updated the chassis to incorporate NEM coupler pockets.

The GWR cattle wagons were equiped with vacuum train brakes, allowing them to be run in fast trains. These wagons were often throughly cleansed ready for use on the express fruit and vegetable trains from the South West during the annual harvest.

This model of the GWR cattle wagon shows further modifications made to a substantial number of vehicles with van style doors and planked-over upper panels, converting these wagons more permanently into fruit vans.

Sometimes known as Pill Box vans these guards brake vans were designed for the Southern Railway in the 1930s, showing the steady development from the short wheelbase brake vans of earlier years towards the familiar BR standard design of the 1950s. The longer wheelbase (distance between the axles) provided a better ride for the guard, also allowing an increase in the weight and therefore effectiveness of the hand brake. Side lookout duckets allowed the guard to keep an eye on the running of the train and to watch for signals which may need him to apply the brake to help bring the train to a halt.

Nicely detailed model of a milk tank wagon operated on the Southern Railway for United Dairies.
Milk tank wagons had split ownership, the railway company supplying the chassis while the tank was owned by the dairy company, hence the dual ownership of this wagon.

A detailed scale model of the 1930s era design of horse box painted in the Great Western plain chocolate brown livery.
The GWR painted wagon type stock which was suitable for travelling with passenger trains in plain brown livery, making these vehicles easily identifyable and blending nicely with the passenger coach paint scheme 

Horse boxes were widely used to transport horses around the country. Often one horse box would be attached to a branch passenger train as a racehorse began the journey to the races, hopefully returning a week or so later with some well-deserved silver!

Bicycle containers had special fittings, including racks and hangers to allow bicycles to be loaded at several levels within the container. These fittings were normally arranged to fold or stow, clearing the interior space for the loading of general goods.
