Expected end February 2008
Improvised gunpowder vans were created to deal with the sudden demand for explosives generated during wartime. Steel bodied vans were quickly modified by sealing of vents and fitting of wooden wall coverings to prevent sparks. This wagon represents many of this type operated by the Southern railway and painted in the distinctive black livery with red cross on the door to warn railway staff of the dangerous contents.
Gunpowder vans were used for all explosives traffic, including civilian requirements in mining and quarrying. Ammunition for army reserve units (equivalent to todays TA units) was another common load.
