Lionheart Trains O BR 16-Ton Steel Mineral Wagon Diagram 1/108 301B

Lionheart Trains O BR 16-Ton Steel Mineral Wagon Diagram 1/108 301B4
A detailed model of the British Railways standard diagram 1/108 welded body 16-ton steel mineral wagon with a replacaemnt body eliminating the top flap from above the side door and retro-fitted with vacuum train brakes.

British Railways ordered over 200,000 of these wagons, the vast majority being to diagram 1/108 or a near-identical variant, with a welded steel body with side and end doors.
As is well known steel rusts and, after many years and many loads of corrosive coal, the extent of body repairs suggested the fitting of an all-new body would be easier! The new body had a few differences to the original, particularly the top flap doors, provided to give a lower body height for shovelling coal by hand, was eliminated. The new continuous top rail made the body much stronger and a programme of rebuilding was initiated in the 1970s. Vacuum fitted wagons were obviously prime candidates for re-bodying as these wagons were in demand and likely to be required for many more years, while BR was trying to phase-out unfitted 'hand brakes only' wagons.
Latterly BR painted all wagons in a mid-brown livery, a less-red shade than the previous bauxite, as wagon barke types were now identified by the TOPS wagon code.

Lionheart Trains models have a body made from ABS plastic incorporating fine detailing and fully finished in 1950's, 1960's and 1970's decorations. The chassis contains a die-cast metal floor to add weight, a compensating beam on one side to improve running performance, brass bearings, die-cast wheels with steel tyres, sprung metal buffers, sprung die-cast hook and metal coupling links. Solebars, axleboxes and brake gear components are moulded in ABS plastic for strength.
This model carries different numbers on each side so you can change wagons simply by turning it around.

Dapol O Gauge BR 1/039 12-Ton Open Wagon M424330 Unpainted Wood RTR 7F-053-003

Dapol O Gauge 7F-053-003 BR diagram 1/039 13-Ton open merchandise wagon unpainted wood.
This wagon is completed in the natural or unpainted wood economy scheme from the WW2 to early British Railways period, with the metalwork being painted. Wagons ran with unpainted wood sides for several years, but deterioration of the unprotected wood saw this particular economy measure being dropped. This model will be quite noticably different in a goods train.

Open wagons had long been a principal merchandise wagons on Britains' railways, even though the percentage of covered vans had increased steadily British Railways still found a need for new open merchandise wagons in the 1950s.

Dapol are producing a range of BR standard design wagons using the standard 10-foot wheelbase 17ft6in length underframe. Many thousands of wagons were built using this frame in the 1950s and 60s, these wagons serving British Rail into the 1980s and still a familiar sight on heritage railways today.
A diecast chassis has been produced, providing plenty of weight for open wagons and any flat wagons which might be produced and are fitted with spring buffers and coupling hook with 3-link couplings. The chassis also incoporates a positionable brake lever.

Most were built as Class A wagons for highly flammable products like petrol and aviation fuel, using the standard RCH 17'6" long 10' wheelbase chassis equipped with either side brakes and oil axleboxes. The 4275 gallon cylindrical tank was saddle mounted on transverse timber baulks and usually platforms were provided either side of a central filler hatch.

A nicely detailed ready to run O gauge 5 plank open wagon from Dapol, matching the RCH 1923 dimensions. This model is finished as a wagon operated by Imperial Chemical Industries in lime service.
Due to the need to prevent contamination of the lime these wagons were not pooled, so ICI Lime 5 plank wagons were still in service in the 1950s and into the 1960s before being replaced by newer types of wagons. Loads carried included limestone for processing and bagged lime for distribution.

The railway companies owned a substantial fleet of open wagons, these being used for almost all types of traffic, the wagons being sheeted when weather protection was required.
This type of end door wagon was usually used in coal and mineral service. These wagons were kept away from agricultral products, but would be used for timber or manufacturerd goods which would not be spoiled by dirt and dust.

While the Southern Railway operated a large number of open wagons for merchandise service the company did not require a substantial number of mineral wagons. In place of a specific design the Southern ordered a small fleet of standard RCH 1923 type 7-plank open wagons to replace worn-out pre-grouping wagons and maintain a stock wagons for coal from the Kent collieries.

John Stephens and company ordered this 7 plank open coal wagon from the nearby Gloucester RCW company.
Photographed by the Gloucester RCW co photographer the wagon was used to advertsie the owners' buisness as 'Jam & Pickle Manufacturers & Vinegar Brewers', a most interesting change from the usual collieries and coal merchants. The wagon was most likely used to ensure a steady supply of coal for the works' boilers and provide extra storage capacity without incurring charges.
Trade directories for 1905 and 1935 give John Stephens' business address as St. Catherine Street, Gloucester and coal was certainly purchased from the Eastern United Colliery in the Forest of Dean. Coal may also have been obtained elsewhere, Gloucester having excellent direct rail links into the Midlands, South Wales and Somerset coal fields.

Dapol O Osman Trevor Powell 7 Plank Open Wagon 7F-071-021

A detailed O gauge model of a 7-plank open wagon operated by Gloucester coal factor and merchant Osman Trevor Powell. Naturally he obtained his wagons on lease from the nearby Gloucester RC&W Co. The Dapol model features openable doors, sprung buffers and thre-link couplings.

Listed as a coal factor in a trade directory of 1876, Trevor Powell's main business address was in Commercial Road, Gloucester, from where he also operated a coal merchants business. He also had offices in Lydney, most likely where coal was purchased and transport arranged. The Gloucester RC&W Co. recorded 28 10-ton wagons hired to Trevor Powell in October 1875, the minute suggesting that this was a renewal of hire on these wagons. Despite several orders indicated in the Gloucester company's surviving records only one official photograph is known.

Dapol O Gauge Clevedon Gas Company 7 Plank Open Wagon Antics Limited Edition 7F-071-

Antics Weston Clevedon & Portishead Railway Collection
Clevedon Gas Company 7 Plank Open Wagon

We are making a start on commissioning the Clevdeon Gas Company wagon as the first of the WC&PR series wagons, with delivery estimated autumn 2017. Pricing will be added shortly.
Please place orders using the 'click and collect' option or using your payment card. We will contact you to complete payment when the models are delivered, your payment card will be verified but not charged. Please do NOT use paypal for pre-orders.

The Clevedon Gas Company's gas works was served by a siding from the Weston Clevedon & Portishead light railway and is possibly the lines' best-known customer. The Clevedon Gas Company is now believed to have operated as many as 30 wagons, the best-known batch being leased from the Gloucester RCW Co in 1932 in grey livery numbered 21-30.
Rail accident records show two of the Clevedon company's wagons being destroyed in the Charfield collision of 1928, these wagons noted as being painted red and a sketch of one of these wagons shows the lettering placed in an arc over the side door. While the first model will be one of the well photographed 1932 batch we will look at producing one of the older wagons in the future.
