The 'Caledonian Sleeper' franchise was initially handed out as part of the ScotRail franchise which was won by National Express who took over the services operation in 1997. National Express continued to use BR's Mk3 sleeper coaches, hiring locomotives from Virgin Trains until March 1998, and EWS from then on. Mk2 seated carriages were added to the service in 2000 featuring First Class-style reclining seats, while the Mk3 sleeping cars were refurbished.

In 2004 the ScotRail Franchise including the 'Caledonian Sleeper' was transferred to FirstGroup with the Caledonian sleeper rolling stock being repainted in FirstGroup's corporate blue, pink and white livery. In 2014 the 'Caledonian Sleeper' became part of a separate franchise awarded to Serco who invested £100 million in new Mark 5 carriages which were introduced in April 2019, replacing the aging Mk3 stock.

The Mk2 Coach was introduced to the British Railway in 1964, designed to be stronger and more resistant to corrosion than their predecessors yet also reducing maintenance costs. A revised painting method coincided with a switch from BR maroon and Southern Region dark green to a blue and grey livery.

1876 Mk2 Coaches were produced by BREL at Derby Litchurch Lane Works between 1963 and 1975, with many remaining in service performing departmental work and charter services. Mk2 Coaches were also widely exported and remain in mainline service in New Zealand as of 2020. Coaches and multiple units based upon the Mk2 design have also operated in Ireland, Taiwan and Kenya.

The West Coast Railway Company WCRC operates a fleet of Mk1 coaches for tour train services including the Fort William to Mallaig Jacobite steam-hauled service.

Second class coaches formed the backbone of the passenger carriage fleet. The use of open plan seating allowed all passengers to be seated at a table, plus provided seats for more passengers with less weight when compared to traditional side-corridor coaches. Later passengers began to appreciate the better field of view from the open style coaches, especially on scenic lines.

New and detailed models of the BR air conditioned express passenger stock built from the early 1970s. BR was one of the first European railways to offer air conditioned accommodation as standard on principal services.

These models are of the Mk.2F coaches, the last of the Mk.2 series build (1973-1975) and almost identical to preceding Mk.2E coaches (1972-73 build), the design changes relating primarily to the air conditioning plant. These two builds formed the backbone of the InterCity locomotive-hauled coach fleet during the 1970s and 80s.

This model of the first class coach with open plan seating is painted in the InterCity red stripe livery. Fitted with DCC controlled interior lighting

Bachmann Branchline 39-750 OO Gauge BR Mk.1 Post Office stowage van code POT. Post Office red livery with EWS branding.

We are taking orders for these coaches, please select the 'Click and Collect' payment option in the checkout process. We will contact you to advise our sell price and arrange payment when the coaches are due to be released.

Travelling Post Office trains were formed with two types of special TPO vehicles, designed to ensure the secure transport of the mail and sorting while on the move. The obvious sorting vans, type POS (for Sorting) have already been produced by Bachmann, this model is of the second type, the stowage van, which was originally known by the post office as a Tender, hence the POT designation. These vans were used to store mail in bags, initially unsorted mail, but steadily replaced by sorted mail as bags were filled in the sorting vans.
The coaches had wide doorways with recesses on each side. Originally these would have accommodated the arms for dropping mail from the moving train. Using the side doors on the stowage van was preferable as the inrush of cold air would not then affect the majority of the crew in the sorting vehicles.

The introduction of this model allows model TPO trains to be formed up with an appropriate selection of vehicles comprising sorting, stowage and general service parcels vans in matching liveries.

This model is painted in the Post Office red livery, as preserved.
Era 9 1995 onwards. Matches sorting vans 39-430 & 39-435 and parcels vans 39-181 & 39-275

Once Virgin Trains obtained the franchise for the West Coast Main Line route on the 9th March 1997 they set about re-branding the locomotive and coach fleet in their very distinctive red, black with white stripes livery. They also put in place a programme of enhancing the service on board.
Subsequently they ordered new trains which would see Virgin branded Mk3a coaches re-appear in many surprising locations prior to a repaint.
