By September 1944 the Allies were convinced the war was won. The normally cautious Montgomery ordered an ambitious airborne operation to seize a series of strategic bridges in Holland, to allow the Allies to gain a foothold over the Rhine at Arnhem. Within days of the British and American paratroopers landing at Arnhem, Nijmegen, and Eindhoven, the German commander in the West, Field Marshal Walther Model, had contained the weak airborne forces and placed panzer forces to block their relief by Allied armor advancing north from Belgium. Waffen-SS units surrounded the British paratroopers at Arnhem, eventually forcing them to pull back across the Rhine, leaving 8,000 dead and prisoners behind. Model successfully prevented Montgomery from securing his bridgehead across the Rhine
