The GWR ordered a large number of their new 57xx design standard shunting engines from the trade, allowing 300 locomotives to be added to stock in just 3 years. Outside builders included North British Locomotive (100), W.G. Bagnall (50), Kerr, Stuart & Co (25), Yorkshire Engine Company (25), Armstrong, Whitworth (25) and Bayer Peacock (25), with Swindon contributing just 50 locomotives to the class. However all of the 'modernised' 8750 type were constructed at Swindon with building continuing until 1950.

Kerr, Stuart built number 7714 was accepted by the GWR in April 1030, sent to the GWRs main Birmingham area shed at Tyseley. The engine migrated slowly northwards, to Birkenhead in 1937 and was allocated to Wrexham Rhosddu shed in December 1958, being withdrawn from there in January 1959. 7714 was clearly withdrawn in a reasonably serviceable condition, being sold to the National Coal Board for Penallta Colliery (Rhymney), latterly as the spare engine. In 1973 the Kidderminster branch of the Severn Valley Railway Association successfully bid for number 7714. Restoration was protracted, with the engine steaming again in 1992. 7714's most recent overhaul was completed in 2019, with the locomotive currently on the active roster at the Severn Valley.
