Designed by CME G J Churchward as powerful multi-purpose tank engines the 5101 class were most frequently deployed on suburban passenger duties, where a reputation for rapid acceleration and fast running was gained. As class numbers grew many were sent to replace 43xx moguls on the heavier stopping trains over cross-country and branchline routes, where the ability to run equally well in forward or reverse was greatly appreciated.
Today several preserved 'large prairies' serve on heritage railways, proving capable on hauling 8-coach trains over challenging grades with ease and ecconomy.

Model painted in BR black livery with early emblem (to be confirmed, Heljan list 'BR early and late crest black and green versions', we would expect black early crest and green late crest). Further details to be advised.

Heljan advise that the prairie has been designed to negotiate the Peco Setrack curve at 1,028mm (40in) but are recommending that a minimum of 1500mm (60in) should be allowed in layout design wherever possible to prevent derailments due to coupling offset or buffer locking.
