In 1970 Ford had acquired a controlling interest in Italian coachbuilder Ghia and replaced, in spirit at least, the 1300E Mk1 with the even more opulent Escort Mk2 Ghia, which was available with either 1,300cc or 1,600cc engines. Ghia models featured a sumptuous velour interior with wooden door-cappings and front seat headrests, plus distinctive square headlights, steel sports-wheels and an elegant front wing-mounted Ghia crest. The car modelled, HMR 490N, has recently been treated to a full restoration in the caring hands of owner Mark Ratcliffe of Wiltshire, who bought the car from his parents in August 1986. They themselves had previously purchased the car back in November 1977 and the little Escort is now well and truly thought of as one of the family.
