Corgi 1/43 Austin Cooper Launch Brochure Car 50th Anniversary of the Mini Cooper (VA02535)
The Austin Seven Cooper modelled, is presented as it appeared on the front of the car's original launch brochure. However it never actually existed in quite this form, as new research carried out by The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and the Mini-Cooper Register has revealed. The picture used on the brochure's front cover was taken at Goodwood in late April 1961 and shows members of the Cooper F1 team, including their young driver Bruce McLaren, preparing the Indianapolis Cooper-Climax T54 whilst a new Austin Seven Cooper is admired. The Farina Grey and Black Austin Seven Cooper used KEL 236, is believed to actually be the Morris Mini Cooper prototype 126 LWL. The number plate was changed specially for the photo shoot. However, the original photographs show the car was fitted with a normal Austin badge, the Austin Cooper badge the car is wearing in the brochure was airbrushed in by the art department as it had not been produced when the picture was taken.

Corgi 1/43 MGB Roadster British Racing Green (VA10700)
From its announcement in 1962, it was obvious that the MGB was going to be a big success. The extremely attractive styling, masterminded at Abingdon by MGs chief body draughtsman Don Hayter, was bang up to date and covered MGs the monocoque structure, which was if anything stronger than it needed to be. You did not get scuttle shake in an MGB! It was produced for over eighteen years and in that time 513,272 were made, making it the best selling sports car in the world for many years. The 1800cc B-Series pushrod engine produced only 95bhp, giving a 0-60 time of 12.2 seconds, so it was not the fastest vehicle in the world but it had a great competition career nevertheless.

Corgi 1/43 MGB Bronze Yellow (VA10709)
British Leyland's internal politics meant that the MGB was not replaced in the early seventies as initially planned but was given small face lifts every year. It received standard Rostyle wheels, rocker switches, rubber-faced overriders, bright lurid colours reflecting the zeitgeist and in 1973 the grille centres and wipers became matt-black.
The car modelled is a famous press and publicity vehicle, photographed on 30th August 1972, and is reproduced as it was that day. The pictures appeared in brochures, newspapers, books and other publicity material. However, research by The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust shows that the number plate AKO 181L appeared on many other BL publicity cars.

Corgi 1/43 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth Diamond White (VA11701)
The original Sierra RS Cosworth caused a sensation when it was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1983 and, when deliveries finally commenced almost a year later, lucky buyers realized it was if anything even better than the hype. Designed with Group A motorsport in mind, meaning at least 5,000 examples had to be produced for homologation, Ford were initialy caught out by the enormous demand for a car which, though ferociously quick, was also a docile, comfortable and practical, family car, as happy in traffic as on the race track. At only 15,950 it was also something of a bargain.

Corgi 1/43 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1 Series 1 Black (VA12000)
From its launch in 1976 demand for the mould breaking left-hand-drive only Golf GTI outstripped supply. However, with British buyers importing their own examples, VW finally launched a right-hand-drive version in July 1979, the first batch of which were 4-speed cars produced before the 5-speed gearbox was announced in August. The car modelled is an early RHD 4-speed model, manufactured in June 1979 and registered in the September at Shrewsbury Motors. It is in original condition, having covered only 16,000 miles, and forms part of Rajan Paymaster's collection of rare Golfs. ENT 847V has featured in both "The Car's the Star" and "Clarkson's Car Years".

Corgi 1/43 Volkswagen Golf MkI Series1 1.3 LS Marino Yellow (VA12001)
VW, now one of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers, were in trouble in the early 1970s. Myriad attempts to replace the Beetle had failed, leaving the company reliant on a 1930s design and in need of a new model. Market research indicated that medium size hatchbacks were likely to be where future demand was greatest, so the company developed one; the Giugiaro styled Golf. Announced in May 1974, the Golf was a thoroughly modern, well built, water-cooled, front-wheel drive hatch, which from the beginning managed to be both classless and chic, over a million were sold in the first two years alone!

Corgi 1/43 Volkswagen Golf GTI MkI Series 2 Mars Red RHD (VA12003B)
In 1976 the GTI created a new market segment, the hot-hatch, a reliable performance car that was easy to live with.
VWs Wolfsburg based engineers kept ahead of the opposition from Ford and other rival manufacturers by gradually improving the GTI which, from the outset, had been in greater demand than initially expected. Stylish wraparound bumpers arrived 1979, whilst much needed rust protection and a 5-speed gearbox were added in 1980.
In September 1982 the car was given a greatly improved 1.8-litre engine which, when added to the previous year's less austere interior and larger rear lights, created the definitive MK1 GTI modelled here.
This model is available in both left and right hand drive.

If a metal metaphor for BLs trials and tribulations during the seventies is sought, look no further than the Triumph TR7; In December 1967 Triumph and MG were deadly rivals and by April 1968 they were commercial partners. Within two years of the merger an informal design competition had effectively developed with BL, between the front engined Project Bullet? Triumph built at there Canley factory with help from stylist Michelotti, and the mid-engined MG ADO 21 project that had been drawn by Longbridge based stylist Harris Mann.

Corgi 1/43 Triumph TR4A Black (VA11501)
The 1961 TR4 was essentially a stylish new body on a TR3 chassis, however, as the sixties began to swing, that live rear axle chassis began to date, so with much money recently invested in body-tooling, Triumph decided to design a new chassis with independent rear suspension (IRS) to fit under their existing body/engine.
The resulting TR4A was launched in 1965 and except for the grille, wing-mounted sidelights and TR4A IRS badge, it looked identical, although the driving experience was much improved, It worked and 28,465 were produced in two years before Triumph created the TR5, by fitting their new 2.5-litre 6-cylinder engine to the TR4A in 1967.

Corgi 1/43 Peugeot 309 Mk2 1.9 GTI Cherry Red (VA11601)
Overview Specification Further Info Project C28, as the 309 was known during its development, started out as a saloon version of the 205, but by the time it was launched in 1985 it had morphed into a hatchback 330mm longer and just 72kg heavier than the 205. It retained the smaller car's door pressings to save tooling costs and the GTI version modelled here also shared its Type XU single overhead cam engine with the 205 GTI. The 309 GTI was launched in February 1987 and soon became a cult car amongst enthusiasts, combining the 205's famous handling prowess and performance with an interior large enough to be used by a family.

Corgi 1/43 Ford Fiesta MkI 1.1 L Nordic Blue (VA12500)
During a press conference in September 1973 Henry Ford II was asked if he planned a smaller car, "It s a luxury we have not allowed ourselves until now" he answered, "maybe soon the luxury we shall not be able to afford will be not making such a car."
On 3rd December he instigated project Bobcat, at that time Ford's biggest ever development programme. It cost over a billion dollars, and produced their smallest ever car, the company's first frontwheel-drive, transverse-engined hatchback, the Fiesta. Launched in 1976 it remained in production, with styling tweaks, until 1989 by which time over 3.7 million had been produced.

Corgi 1/43 Ford Cortina MkI Super Seaform Blue (VA07309)
Originally introduced in September 1962 as a 1.2-litre 49bhp, two or four-door saloon, the Cortina was the most thoroughly developed and cost controlled car of its era. Initially appearing conventional when compared with some rivals, aerospace construction and design techniques allowed Ford to produce a very strong car which weighed only 1750lbs and was also simple to maintain. Lightness meant fuel efficiency, sparkling performance, nimble handling, better braking and low construction costs which could be reflected in its bargain price of ?639. The Super, modelled here, appeared within months of the Cortina?s launch offering more luxurious trim and equipment as well as a more powerful engine for only ?688.

Corgi 1/43 Ford Capri 280 Brooklands Green The Last Offical Ford Capri Special Edition (VA10813)
Chassis number GG11896 was, numerically, the last of the 1,886,647 Capris manufactured. It came off the line in Cologne on the 19th December 1986 and was one of 1038, UK market only, ?11,999 limited edition Capri 280 run out models. All featured Brooklands-Green paint, Recaro leather seats, a limited-slip-differential and 15inch alloys shod with Pirelli P7s. Mindful of publicity, Ford arranged for ?the last? Capri to come off the line in early afternoon thereby ensuring it appeared on that night?s TV news meaning several cars with earlier chassis numbers were finished later. Journalist Mike McCarthy spent the day helping to build it prior to running GG11896 as an Autocar long-term test car.

Corgi 1/43 MGB White Gold 50th Anniversary Model New Tooling (VA13000)
The MGB, launched in September 1962, was initially planned to have a product life of ten years. However, fears that American safety legislation might ban convertibles, the financial constraints created by the chaos inside British Leyland along with the management?s Triumph bias all threatened to prevent a new car being developed. Instead, the MGB continued selling well, especially in its primary market of America, testament to the genius of MG stylist Don Hayter and the car?s enduring appeal. However, from September 1974, like many other cars of the same era, it was fitted with heavy Bayflex-90 Polyurethane bumpers and had its ride-height raised by 4cm in order to meet stringent US safety legislation.
