Corgi 1/43 Bentley Continental GT3 Launch Car CC56901

Corgi 1/43 Bentley Continental GT3 Launch Car CC56901
At the 2012 Paris International Auto Salon Bentley announced they were planning a return to the race track with the unveiling of the Continental GT3 race car concept. The stripped-back Continental GT3 represents the latest, most fearsome incarnation of Bentley?s racing tradition. The Continental GT3 takes the essence of the Continental GT and pushes it to its limit. The body is almost identical, but with doors, boot lid and bonnet re-made in carbon fibre. In fact over 1,000kg of weight has been lost.

Ford Anglia 1200 Super, Platinum Grey and Ermine White
The Anglia modelled is remarkably original and has covered just 16,000 miles since being registered to Mr George Irwin Smith on 1st May 1964, by Dinnages of Wivelsfield Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex; the company having been the Ford Main Dealers for this area from 1956 to the present day. Current owner Colin Moir, a time-served Ford mechanic who runs his own garage business in Aberdeenshire, saw the car at the 2013 NEC Classic Car Show Silverstone Auctions' sale and, having wanted one when he was a Ford apprentice, purchased it on impulse. He then had to fly back to Scotland, pick up his low-loader, and drive back to Birmingham to pick it up!

Corgi 1/43 Ford Zephyr MkII 1959 RAC Rally Gerry Burgess Cirrus White VA06106

1959 was a transitional year for the RAC Rally, Jack Kemsley had taken charge for the first time , reduced the emphasis on driving tests and changed the date to November, Sixteen foreign crews had entered and the route they faced was a tough one , starting in the Scottish Highlands , through Wales and on into London. The Braemar pass was blocked by snow on the first day, and crews that chose to divert to the A9 were the ones that got through. A German entrant put in a protest claiming the blocked section should be scrubbed from the rally, this was rejected by the FIA so the Burgess/Croft-Pearson Zephyr was declared the winner.

Corgi 1/43 Ford Cortina MkI GT Roger Clark 1965 Scottish Rally VA07305

A young Roger Clark was starting to make a name in the rally world, while driving a white Ford Cortina MkI GT he had prepared at his family's Ford dealership. After winning the Scottish Rally in 1964, the basically standard white bodyshell was starting to literally fall apart and by then the young talented Roger Clark was able to secure a full-strength 'works' bodyshell in Red. The car was built up using many parts from the old car and so was able to retain it's 2ANR registration that it carried on the white car and before that on his original Mini Cooper.

Corgi 1/43 Chrysler Sunbeam WRW 29S Works development car Bernard Unett and Terry Harryman VA11304

Overview Specification Further Info Chrysler UKs competition manager Des ODell immediately saw the Avenger based, but smaller and more nimble, Sunbeam had great potential as a competition car. Before the car had even been launched his department had built two prototypes, WRW 30S and WRW 29S. Whilst 30S developed into the first Lotus engined car and eventually into a full Group 4 machine, 29S was intended to replace the Group 1 Avenger as an amateur or clubman customers car. It was fitted with a 2-litre Brazilian-blocked pushrod overhead-valve engine mated to a close ratio four-speed Avenger gearbox. It was used to help chassis development and entered many events during 1978.

Corgi 1/43 Peugeot 309 GTI 16v Lombard RAC Rally 1991 Richard Burns/Robert Reid SPECIAL EDITION VA11606

Peugeot's legendary Motorsport Director Des O'Dell kept an eye on Richard from the beginning of his career through old friend Gordon Jarvis, who had helped Richard build his first rally car before he was even old enough to hold a driving licence. He was impressed; Richard was committed to his rallying, attended the training days, was well turned out and through the training of Jarvis and unofficial manager David Williams had even become adept at handling the media. His smooth economical driving style, unusual in one so young, was deceptively quick although the fact he rarely damaged cars, which most would see as a plus, was interpreted by some in the sport as a sign that ultimately he did not have the speed required. His regular fastest stage times never did quite satisfy those doubters.

Corgi 1/43 Subaru Legacy RS (Group A) Manx International Rally 15th-17th September 1993 Richard Burns/Robert Reid SPECIAL EDITION VA11804
Having won the Peugeot Challenge for the second successive year, Burns and Reid's aspiration of a works drive for 1992 looked realistic, but actually proved optimistic. However they hoped the new Shell Scholarship would be their salvation. A scheme designed to reward the most promising young driver of the year, it offered a works Group N Sierra Cosworth drive in the 1992 British Open Rally Championship as a prize. Burns, Reid and mentor David Williams prepared thoroughly for the selection day and were the favourites. The prize, though, went to Alistair McRae. Burns and Reid were devastated but Williams was incensed and vowed they would continue rallying.

Corgi 1/43 Volkswagen Golf 1977 Production Saloon Car Championship R Lloyd VA12002

VW, now one of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers, were in trouble in the early 1970s. Myriad attempts to replace the Beetle had failed, leaving the company reliant on a 1930s design and in need of a new model. Market research indicated that medium size hatchbacks were likely to be where future demand was greatest, so the company developed one; the Giugiaro styled Golf. Announced in May 1974, the Golf was a thoroughly modern, well built, water-cooled, front-wheel drive hatch, which from the beginning managed to be both classless and chic, over a million were sold in the first two years alone!

In 1992, Vatanen and Berglund had finished second on the RAC Rally driving a Subaru Legacy and in '93 hoped their new Impreza would go one better. However, it was team-mates McRae and Ringer who led initially, whilst Vatanen and Berglund had damaged their Impreza in two incidents and lost over ten minutes. Unfortunately, McRae and Ringer retired on day three with a damaged radiator but on the last day some Subaru honour was restored as, in treacherous arctic conditions, Vatanen and Berglund stormed back through the field and set three fastest stage times. They finished a well-deserved fifth, eight minutes behind the winning Toyota of Kankkunen and Grist.

Their horizons were broadened considerably by contesting six rounds of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship as well as two WRC events, the Safari Rally in Kenya and Rally Australia. Results were mixed during this learning season, especially early on, but they gradually improved, and during the arduous Hong Kong to Beijing Rally the pair were challenging for the lead before sliding off and ultimately settling for second behind their team leader. The Audi quattro made its international rally debut at the 1981 Monte Carlo Rally and was astonishingly rapid. Corgi 1/43 Vauxhall Astra Mk2 GTE 16V, Arctic White, 'Vauxhall Heritage Centre', RHD (UK) VA13207A
Vauxhall's Mk2 Astra was launched in 1984 and a GTE version followed shortly after. However, to counter competition from Peugeot, Ford and VW in the hot-hatch market, the GTE 16V was revealed in 1988. It featured a fire-breathing Cosworth-developed XE20 'red-top' twin-cam engine which sang above 4000rpm and made it, by some margin, the fastest hot-hatch of its era in a straight line; no surprise for a 150bhp car which weighed around a tonne and had class leading aerodynamics. Its torque-steer was almost as legendary as its straight-line performance although the later addition of ABS brakes helped tame the handling and the GTE 16V is now seen as one of the great cars of its era.

Corgi 1/43 Mini 1275GT1979 Tricentrol British Saloon Car Championship, Overall and Class A Winner, Richard Longman.
VA13503 British Leyland were keen to promote the Mini 1275GT and encouraged Richard Longman, who?d reduced his motor sport commitments as a driver after he started his tuning business in 1971, to come back and take on Bernard Unett?s all-conquering 1300cc Avenger. After promising forays in 1977 Longman was back full time for 1978 and won Class A in eleven of the twelve races to take a convincing title win. He built a new 1275GT for 1979, won ten out of twelve races, and was again crowned overall champion. This was the Mini?s fifth BSCC title and proved to be the model?s last hurrah; a fitting end to its glorious twenty year competition career.

The 1275GT modelled was a British Leyland press-fleet and publicity vehicle which, when new in July 1979, was photographed comprehensively on the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) test track near Nuneaton in Warwickshire. The photos featured ?Saskia?, a Birmingham-based model, real name Pat Parkes, dressed in denim hot pants and a cropped t-shirt whilst carrying a crash helmet and leaning on the car. This 1275GT has been researched in detail for Corgi Vanguards by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. They discovered the pictures whilst preparing their new photographic archive website, www.motorgraphs.com, a resource for enthusiasts and historians full of archive photographs from the British motor industry?s fascinating and varied past.

Corgi 1/43 Mini 1275GT, Glacier White, 'The 4,000,000th Mini' VA13505
The Mini passed the production milestone of four million examples in late November 1976 and was the first British built car to do so. British Leyland never missed a publicity opportunity so made sure the four millionth was a 1275GT, the top model at that time. They also issued press releases and pictures featuring Miss Great Britain 1975, Mini-owner Sue Cuff, driving the '4,000,000th MINI' liveried 1275GT off the production line at Longbridge. Miss Cuff was then photographed sitting on its bonnet but the photographers wanted to see her in a miniskirt, a garment out of fashion by 1976, so Miss Cuff obligingly cut down one of her own skirts!

Triumph's Dolomite Sprint of 1973 had the first mass production 4-cylinder 16-valve cylinder head and most of the Japanese manufacturers had adopted the technology by the early 1980s. Thus, VW were following the next logical development path when they developed a double-overhead-cam 16-valve cylinder head for the trusty EA827 engine. The new unit's crank and pistons were lightened to cope with the multi-valve's appetite for revs, and a larger capacity oil pump originally developed for the diesel was used, but otherwise the block was little changed. It quickly gained a reputation as a tough reliable engine and, commercially, was a very sensible design which went on to power many other vehicles in the company's range repaying its development budget many times over.
