Corgi 1/43 Ford Cortina MkI GT Roger Clark 1965 Scottish Rally (VA07305)

A young Roger Clark was starting to make a name in the rally world, while driving a white Ford Cortina MkI GT he had prepared at his family's Ford dealership. After winning the Scottish Rally in 1964, the basically standard white bodyshell was starting to literally fall apart and by then the young talented Roger Clark was able to secure a full-strength 'works' bodyshell in Red. The car was built up using many parts from the old car and so was able to retain it's 2ANR registration that it carried on the white car and before that on his original Mini Cooper.

Corgi 1/43 Lotus Cortina MkI Model 1966 RAC Rally Jim Clark 40th Anniversay 1966 RAC Rally (VA07306)

Every generation has a great driver, someone of natural genius and balance, who has the talent to be fast anywhere in any car; for his generation the legendary Jim Clark was that man. The twice World Champion was entered in the 1966 RAC Rally and many assumed that this was a publicity stunt. However whilst Clark s F1 rival Graham Hill had a journalist in the passenger seat of his Mini Cooper, Clark elected to take experienced co-driver Brian Melia, and when interviewed provided journalists with an incisive analysis of the difference between F1 driving and rallying. A novice to the sport he may have been, but that did not stop him setting three fastest stage times, seven second fastest times, nor rarely being out of the top ten.

Corgi 1/43 MGB Roadster Julius Thurgood/Willhire (VA10701)

In late 1979 Julius Thurgood puchased a venerable 1967 MGB Roadster that had been used as a racecar for most of its life. Fuelled by ambition to compete in long distance events, Julius teamed up with brothers Rae and Graham Davis to form the Moto-Build racing team in order to contest the inaugral 1980 Willhire 24 Hours at Snetterton. The rebuilt MG stood up well against modern machinery in this gruelling marathon, despite being sidlined with a broken differential in the early hours of the Sunday morning. The errant axle was rebuilt in the pits using parts from an A60 van retrieved from a local scrapyard. The team resumed the race to finish 16th overall, winning 200 in prize money for their efforts.

Corgi 1/43 Datapost Ford Escort Mk3 RS1600ti Model 1984 BSCC C Class Champion R Longman (VA11000)

In 1980, the first front wheel drive Escort, the Mk3 was born, though its competition potential was not as immediate as earlier marks. In 1982, Ford approached former British Saloon Car Class Champion and motorsport preparation expert Richard Longman with the idea of him running a works-backed team in the 1983 British Saloon Car Championship. Sponsorship from Royal Mail Datapost and Avon Tyres meant that the cars were among the most eye-catching on the grid. Despite both Richard and team mate Alan Curnow gaining three class wins, they lost the Class C Championship. However, after many improvements throughout the Winter, Richard went on to win the 1984 BSCC Class C Championship by twenty-nine points, equating from six of the eleven events contested, also taking the Constructors Prize. If he had not got caught up in someone elses accident at Brands Hatch, he may have bettered second place in the overall Championship.

Corgi 1/43 Chrysler Sunbeam WRW 29S Works development car Bernard Unett and Terry Harryman (VA11304)

Overview Specification Further Info Chrysler UKs competition manager Des ODell immediately saw the Avenger based, but smaller and more nimble, Sunbeam had great potential as a competition car. Before the car had even been launched his department had built two prototypes, WRW 30S and WRW 29S. Whilst 30S developed into the first Lotus engined car and eventually into a full Group 4 machine, 29S was intended to replace the Group 1 Avenger as an amateur or clubman customers car. It was fitted with a 2-litre Brazilian-blocked pushrod overhead-valve engine mated to a close ratio four-speed Avenger gearbox. It was used to help chassis development and entered many events during 1978.

The Legacy was the first rally Subaru developed by Dave Richards's Banbury based Prodrive concern and 1992 was the year both car and team became true contenders. Richards had won the World Rally Championship as Vatanen's co-driver in 1982 and hired his friend to lead the team. Vatanen proved he had lost none of his speed and was denied two likely victories in New Zealand and Australia by mechanical failures. A second in the season closing RAC Rally was the year's best result but a fine fourth place on his home event in Finland, only 2min 32secs behind Auriol's winning Lancia, was the most impressive.

VW, now one of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers, were in trouble in the early 1970s. Myriad attempts to replace the Beetle had failed, leaving the company reliant on a 1930s design and in need of a new model. Market research indicated that medium size hatchbacks were likely to be where future demand was greatest, so the company developed one; the Giugiaro styled Golf. Announced in May 1974, the Golf was a thoroughly modern, well built, water-cooled, front-wheel drive hatch, which from the beginning managed to be both classless and chic, over a million were sold in the first two years alone!

Corgi 1/43 Subaru Impreza 2000cc Turbo World Rally Champion 1995 (VA12100)

McRaes' 1995 season started badly, with no hint that he would end it as World Rally Champion and the youngest ever winner of the title. However, by dint of a superb winning drive in New Zealand, and a controversial second place in Catalunya, McRae and Ringer started the last event of the year, their home rally, equal on points with Subaru team-mates Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya. The result was never really in doubt, despite suffering a puncture in Pundershaw and losing two minutes, McRae simply pulverised the opposition to win the rally and become Britains' first World Rally Champion. In Catalunya McRae and Ringer were classified second behind team mates Sainz and Moya after Dave Richards, Subarus' team manager, imposed team orders. Colin initially did not agree with this and posted a series of fast stage times. However, he finally assented and clocked into the penultimate time control late, giving Sainz and Moya the victory.

Corgi 1/43 Ford (Merkur) Sierra XR4ti 1985 British Touring Car Champion Andy Rouse (VA12202)

In 1983 Ford's long term strategy for Touring Cars was to develop what would become the Sierra Cosworth. However, with their outdated Capris being humiliated regularly, the North American market's Merkur XR4Ti, with its 2.3-litre 4-cylinder S.O.H.C 'Lima' engine, offered a quick solution and had greater tuning potential than the European V6 engined Sierra XR4i.

Engineer and driver Andy Rouse was engaged to develop the car, which was not homologated until 1st April 1985. Andy duly drove the Merkur to its maiden victory just days later at Oulton Park in the Championship s 2nd round. He went on to dominate, winning 9 of the remaining 11 races.

Corgi 1/43 Ford Fiesta XR2 Caspian Blue (VA12504)

  • Ford?s Dunton-based ?Special Vehicle Engineering? worked hard to make the XR2 handle the extra power provided by its Cortina 1600GT engine and Weber carburettor. The front ride height was lowered an inch by altering the MacPherson strut?s spring-pan whilst the tie bar to the front frame was lowered to reduce rearwards pitch on acceleration and to counteract the vicious torque steer that often afflicted powerful front-wheel-drive cars before electronic intervention became the norm. Although stiffer damping was used, the XR2 retained the 1300S?s springs and rear anti-roll bar. The Mk1 XR2 was released when the Fiesta was five years old, meaning it was only in production for just over two years.
