This is the UK version of what was known within General Motors as the J Car. A truly global car it was the first vehicle to be designed "virtually", on General Motors' then state of the art supercomputer. Known as the Opel Ascona in Europe and by a host of different names around the world (including Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunbird) the approach paid off. The UK market alone took 807,000 J cars between 1981 and 1988 and its basic architecture lasted well into the mid 90s under both the MkIII Cavalier and various other GM cars. The launch of the Legacy in February 1989 ushered in a new era for Subaru. Previously a maker of quirky but tough well engineered cars, marketed on their heritage of aircraft engineering excellence, the Legacy was a larger, faster, and more luxurious product than any previous Subaru. The Legacy s new four cylinder EJ boxer engines may have retained their traditional layout but were an all new design which would go on to power the Impreza to World Rally Championship glory. However, Subaru s first ever WRC win was achieved on the 1993 New Zealand Rally by a Legacy driven by Colin McRae and Derek Ringer.

In 1976 the GTI created a new market segment, the hot-hatch, a reliable performance car that was easy to live with.
VWs Wolfsburg based engineers kept ahead of the opposition from Ford and other rival manufacturers by gradually improving the GTI which, from the outset, had been in greater demand than initially expected. Stylish wraparound bumpers arrived 1979, whilst much needed rust protection and a 5-speed gearbox were added in 1980.
In September 1982 the car was given a greatly improved 1.8-litre engine which, when added to the previous year's less austere interior and larger rear lights, created the definitive MK1 GTI modelled here.
This model is available in both left and right hand drive.

The Impreza turned Subaru from a little known manufacturer of quirky four-wheel-drive vehicles to the globally famous maker of a rallying legend.
Launched in 1992, the whole range still sported Subaru's trademark frameless windows and distinctive sounding fourcam boxer engine, but it was the Turbo's earth shattering performance which impressed.
This compact conservatively styled saloon totally rewrote the performance car rulebook, mating secure sure-footed handling and rifle-bolt gearchange to the sort of blistering straight-line pace that humbles Ferraris and Porsches. Nothing was faster point-to-point: the 1990s true hero car.

Britain's first practical driving test was in 1935 and BSM student Mr Beene was the first to pass. BSM was founded in 1910 by the Peckham based mechanic Stanley Roberts, and is now the largest driving school in the UK. They use a fleet of approximately four thousand Vauxhalls to give one hundred and seventy thousand new drivers over five million driving lessons every year. Astra's make up around fifteen percent of BSM's fleet, either as 137bhp 1.6 manuals or 137bhp 1.8 automatics. They were introduced to BSM in June 2003 as an option for taller learners or instructors, and have proved very popular. This model features working suspension.

Although also produced in France when launched in 1985, the 309 was the first Peugeot badged car to be built in Coventry at Ryton-on-Dunsmore, the former Rootes Group plant originally built under the wartime shadow factory scheme.
It replaced the Talbot Horizon, Solara and Alpine on the British production lines, and 837,520 examples were produced world-wide before production ceased in 1993. Based on the 205 floorpan, but stretched by 330mm, the 309GTI is famed for its brilliant ride and handling balance. Many felt that the minor 70kg weight penalty of the bigger car was a price worth paying for its improved stability.

Available in only three colours, Diamond White, Black and Moonstone Blue, and with only two options (electric windows or central locking) the Sierra Cosworth grew out of Ford's desire to enter Group A Touring Car racing, which demanded a minimum 5,000 vehicles be produced.
It was initially thought they would be difficult to sell but in fact Ford underestimated demand and 6,021 examples of the original model were produced whilst all four incarnations of the Sierra Cosworth sold 26,771 cars in total.
Its chassis and drive-train were then used to create the Escort Cosworth in 1992, of which 7,000 examples were sold.

Audi were not the first to make a four-wheel-drive sports coup?, but crucially, they were the first to make one in volume and in doing so totally rewrote the performance car handbook. It was so obviously better in nearly every way that rival car makers scrambled to catch up and it is due to the quattro that so many cars now use four-wheel-drive. Launched in 1980 it remained available for 11 years and, such was the car?s significance, that Audi substantially updated what was by then an outmoded but iconic car and produced the fastest and most potent version during its last two years of production, the legendary quattro 20 Valve.
