British Rail's new corporate image of the mid-1960's saw the introduction of the familiar blue and grey passenger coach livery, along with the InterCity express train marketing brand. Plain blue diesel and electric locomotives hauled these coaches across the country for many years, with progressive advances in speed and passenger comfort. In the mid-1980's brightly coloured sector liveries began to appear, with principal expresses gaining a distinctive InterCity livery, while Network South East formed a coherent image for the commuter belt.

The InterCity branding and marketing initiative started with the introduction of the new mark 2 stock. Bachmann's model displays the blue and grey livery with InterCity lettering, as carried by these vehicles when new in the late 1960's. The mark 2 coach was developed with air conditioning added in the early 1970's and by the mid 70's the early mark 2 coaches had been displaced from InterCity duties into the general service pool. In many cases InterCity lettering would have been retained until an overhaul and repaint had taken place.
