The first wagons were built in the mid-1970s as HBAs, but as construction progressed, the design was changed, and the code HEA was used for later batches. The HBAs were subsequently modified to match the HEAs and recoded, giving a total fleet of almost 2,000 HEAs.

The wagons replaced ageing wooden- and steel-bodied wagons, delivering household coal to local terminals and reaching all corners of the UK. The HEAs worked in both mixed freight and block train formations.

With the demand for household coal in decline, HEAs were used to transport other minerals, like rock salt, and many were rebuilt or recoded, for example some were used as Nuclear Barrier Wagons (RNAs) with their hoppers removed, or box wagons (MEAs) with new box bodies to carry a variety of bulk loads.

Modified from the original HAA coal hopper design with a dust hood added to reduce the escape of coal dust during loading and while travelling. The hopper mounting frame on is model is painted yellow with Mainline freight branding and Railfreight coal sector markings.

Era 9

JPA 100-tonne bulk cement tank wagon in the livery of Lafarge, the current owners of the previous blue circle company.

Along with the new models of the BR SPA 4-wheel steel carrier wagons this model is being produced, representing one of these wagons in the engineers fleet. Coded ZAA these wagons were cascaded into the engineering fleet after the end of the Speedlink network. Many of the wagons have since been returned to traffic use with EWS.

Model of the BR SPA 4-wheel steel carrier wagons. These low-sided wagons had battened floors designed to allow fork-lift trucks and lifting straps to be passed beneath the load easily. The wagons were used for many steel flows, including wagonload deliveries to steel stockholders.

This wagon is painted in Network Rail yellow livery, now applied to many engineering service vehicles.

These were integrated into British Railways at Nationalisation; some of them to be once more re liveried under sectorisation as the network was prepared to be returned to private ownership. BR goods train brake van painted in engineering departmental grey with yellow stripe 'Dutch' livery.
The LNER introduced this design of goods train guard brake van in the late 1930s, the longer chassis wheelbase giving a much smoother ride than the previous shorter designs. The cabin length remained the same, being perfectly adequate for its' single passenger and for stowing the equipment required to be carried with the train. This design was adopted for the standard British Railways goods train brake vans built in the 1950s. By the 1980s only the BR engineering departments regularly used brake vans as 'unfitted' (no train brake) wagons had been eliminated from regular service. While only one van would be needed if special or unfitted wagons were formed in the engineering train often more than one would be used to provide a riding and mess van for staff travelling to remote work sites by train.

In August 2023 DB Cargo retired the last of the former BR/ECC china clay CDA hoppers after a service life of 35 years. These unique and distinctive wagons will be missed by enthusiasts but thanks to PECO, modellers can keep their legacy going in model form.
