Peco N BR/ECC China Clay Hood 5 Plank Wagon NR-51

Of all the wagon types used on British Rail during the '70s and '80s, nothing screams Cornwall more loudly than the iconic Clay Hood. For years these wagons trundled around the county from clay dries to port, and back, as well as on longer distance services to and from the Potteries area of Staffordshire. Their characteristic canvas "hood" protected the powdery china clay, keeping it dry and usable. The wagons demise came in the late 1980s, when the wooden-bodied wagons became life-expired and incompatible with the modern air-braked freight network.

Peco believe they have captured the essence of these attractive wagons well, complete with slightly textured canvas hood, with subtle hints of the ripple effect of the material. Although initially offered as a pristine model, they inevitably became very weathered, as the china clay got everywhere!

Graham Farish N BR Cattle Wagon Bauxite (Early) 373-260C

Cattle, comprising all kinds of 4-legged farm animals, were important business for the railways until the 1960s. Special wagons were required to convey live animals safely and quickly as, just like human passengers, animals needed to be fed and watered at regular intervals.

This model is of the BR standard design of cattle wagon, based on the GWR design wagons which already incorporated many of the 'desirable' features.

This model carries the BR standard bauxite livery. Era 4

Graham Farish N BR Ale Wagon Converted From Cattle Wagon BR Bauxite 373-262B

Graham Farish N 373-262B 8 Ton Ale Wagon BR Bauxite

This model of the BR standard design of cattle wagon is finished as one of these wagons allocated adapted to carry beer in barrels. This was a good use for the well-ventilated cattle wagons, first exploited by the GWR during a downturn in cattle traffic. Wagons were specifically marked ALE to indicate to railway staff they should be used for 'clean' loads only (no doubt the brewery would appreciate receiving a return load of empties) and not loaded with cattle!

Graham Farish N 7 Plank Wagon with Coke Rail BR Grey 377-176C

Many thousdands of former private owner wagons were taken over by British Railways in 1948. A large number of these wagons were repaired and repainted into the BR grey goods livery, making them a key feature of the early British Railways period. These rebuilt wagons worked alongside the new steel wagons, being the last ?wooden bodied coal wagons to be replaced.

This model in the BR grey scheme is an ideal wagon for the 1950's and 60's era. Coke extension boards are fitted, a fuel type for which the wood body wagons were much preferred.

Bachmann Graham Farish N Gauge 377-376A 20 Ton Toad Brake Van BR Grey Weathered

New tooling has replaced the original Farish GWR 'Toad' brake van model, bringing the model up to the standards of new models.

British Railways standard brake vans with the brake wheel inside the cabin replaced these ex-GWR vans in the 1950s, but the surplus GWR vans with a large cabin and enclosed verandah were eagerly adopted by the engineers, quickly finding new homes all across the network.

Dapol N BR Fruit D Long Wheelbase Covered Fruit Van W38121 Blue 2F-014-007

The Fruit D was the last of the GWR design ventilated fruit vans, this design with three side doors not appearing until after WW2. Many were built in the early BR years and were one of the last GWR types to be found in service, lasting into the early 1980s.
These vans were suitable for running in secondary passenger trains and parcels trains. Later many were adopted by the engineering departments, carrying spare parts for locomotives between depots.

This model painted in the British Rail blue livery applied to the vans still in service from the late 1960s, including those vans employed in ENPARTS (Engineers Parts) service, distributing spares and refurbished parts for the Western regions' diesel fleet from Swindon works to locomotive depots.

Dapol N BR 21-ton Hopper Wagon E289585 2F-034-050

Dapol have produced a very nice model of the BR standard design 21-ton hopper wagons.

These wagons were developed from an LNER design, following on from the extensive use of hoppers for coal service by the North Eastern, being selected by the British Railways ideal stocks committee as a standard type. Built in both unfitted and later vacuum fitted versions these hoppers were used for coal and basic ore traffic where hopper discharge was possible, the type being closely associated with the coa, concentration depot concept. A considerable fleet of the vacuum fitted wagons remained in use untl the 1980s miners strike.

This model is available in a number of liveries lettered for BR, NCB, British Steel, British Gas, Charringtons (BR), 'house coal concentration' (BR) and Cadburys! Please indicate which livery you require in the 'other instructions' box of the checkout screen so we can order from stock currently available from Dapol.

Dapol N BR 20-ton Steel Mineral Wagon B315783 2F-038-031

Model of a 20-ton steel bodied open wagon built for British Railways.

British Railways followed the GWRs' lead in building higher capacity wagons to help reduce the cost of transporting basic materials like coal and ore. Although the 24-ton type, using the maximum axle load for universal route acceptance, was the preferred design these wagons were too tall for many colliery loading screens, so large numbers of this lower-sided 20/21-ton design were constructed.
