Many thousdands of former private owner wagons were taken over by British Railways in 1948. A large number of these wagons were repaired and repainted into the BR grey goods livery, making them a key feature of the early British Railways period. These rebuilt wagons worked alongside the new steel wagons, being the last ½wooden bodied coal wagons to be replaced.
This model in the BR grey scheme is an ideal wagon for the 1950's and 60's era. Coke extension boards are fitted, a fuel type for which the wood body wagons were much preferred.
