The GWR was not a prolific user of the RCH standard mineral wagons, preferring to build its own designs and using very robust steel bodies for locomotive coal wagons and the majority of the South Wales coal traffic was carried in wagons owned by collieries or coal factors. The company did need a small fleet of general use mineral wagons and often hired in wagons from the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon company when extra wagons were needed at short notice.
This model carries all the signs of a short-term hire wagon, carrying three Gloucester G plates, which would be for the builder, owner and repair instructions. The 0 prefix to the number also indicates a hired-in wagon, its number may duplicate the number of another GWR wagon and the zero prefix ensures it is uniquely identified.
