Tragically, she was overwhelmed by rough seas during a crossing from Stranraer to Larne and sank in the great storm of 1953 which also caused widespread flooding on the North Sea coasts. 130 passengers and crew lost their lives.
One of the first of this type of ship, the stern vehicle doors were only 5ft high and buckled under pressure of the waves, flooding the car deck. The ship had been fitted with a guillotine outer door by 1953 but it was not deployed on this crossing...
