Hobby Master 1/48 Kubelwagen Type 82 Sturmartillerie- Brigade 667, Western Front 1944 (HG1201)

In November 1938 Porsche completed a prototype vehicle based on the Volkswagen designated the Kubelwagen Type 62. Kubelwagen is short for K belsitzwagen, (bucket seat car). The Type 62 lacked good cross-country performance so ground clearance was increased and a modified gear ratio. This gave birth to the Type 82 and in 1940 mass production began at the Volkswagen factory. By early 1943 20,000 vehicles were produced with the total reaching 50,435 by the end of WWII. The Kubelwagen was to Germany what the jeep was to the Allies.

Hobby Master 1/48 British Light Utility Car Tilly Raf, 1940s (HG1301)

Early in WWII the need for a small utility vehicle became apparent. To expedite the manufacturing process some civilian car designs were modified. These small utility vehicles were usually referred to as tilly, a play on the word utility. There were 4 major producers of these vehicles, Austin, Hillman, Standard and Morris. Manufacturers kept some of their distinctive physical features such as hoods (bonnets) and grilles. The tilly was well suited for the multitude of tasks it was assigned and became an iconic WWII British vehicle.

Hobby Master 1/48 Schwinnwagen Type 166 Gross Deutschland, Russia, March 1944 (HG1501)

Ferdinand Porsche produced an amphibious version of the Kubelwagen (Type 82) known as Type 128. The vehicle was too large and unstable so he reduced it in size to create the Type 166 Schwimmwagen. The Type 166 originally replaced reconnaissance unit motorcycle-sidecars but also became a scout and staff car. Amphibious and all-wheel drive made the Type 166 a vehicle for mud, snow, sand or water. The rear-mounted three-blade propeller was lowered and self-engaged to linkage from the engine. The Type 166 was the most produced amphibious vehicle in history.

Military wanted to standardize so one manufacturer was selected, Willys-Overland mostly

Hobby Master 1/72 British Cromwell IV 2nd Armoured Welsh Guards, Germany, April 1945 (HG3110)

In WWII the British had an armour doctrine that called for two classes of tanks. Infantry tanks were just that, fairly slow well armoured with the main goal to support the infantry. The Cruiser tanks were just the opposite they compromised armour for speed and agility. This was very important during their reconnaissance roles. Using the Meteor engine the Mk. IV could attain speeds up to 52 km/h while almost gliding across the terrain on the Christie Suspension. Later models received heavier armor when it was deemed some speed should be given up for crew protection. Late in WWII there probably were more Cromwell Mk. IV in operation than any other British tank but the Churchill and the Sherman overshadowed its importance.

Hobby Master 1/72 Chinese Type 59 Main Battle Tank Model (HG3308)

Hobby Master 1/72 Ground Power Series HG3308 - Type 59 MBT Chinese People's Liberation Army THESE ARE PRE-PRODUCTION PICTURES NOT THE FINISHED MODEL Babel Fish Translation TOP OF PAGE In 1956 an agreement between the Soviets and China saw the USSR agree to assist the Chinese in building a manufacturing facility to produce the T-54A. In 1957 production started using parts supplied by the Soviets but were gradually replaced with parts made in China. The first MBT produced in China was a basic clone of the T-54A but didn?t include an IR searchlight. The first tanks were completed in 1958 and were accepted by the PLA in 1959 and thus received the designation Type-59. The Chinese industrial designation for this tank was WZ120. Production continued until 1980 when approximately 9,500 to 10,000 tanks had been manufactured with many going to units such as the 1st armored division of 65th Group Army in the Beijing Military District. Of these approximately 4,000 were exported. Over the years the Type 59 received six upgrades one being the replacement of the 100 mm Type 59 rifled gun with a 105 mm rifled gun. It also received a new fire control system, fire suppression system, improved engines, laser range finders, improved armor and a list of others. The main users of the Type 59 were China, Vietnam, Cambodia, North Korea and Pakistan who had more than 1,300. These Chinese Type 59s also showed up in Albania, Bangladesh, the Congo, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe and Iran. The Type 59 became the basis for the newer Types 69 and 79 MBTs.

Hobby Master 1/72 T-55A "Alf" "Muslim-Pocket" Bihac, Bosnia_Herzegovina 1992 (HG3314)

As a replacement for the WWII era T-34 the T-55 was produced in the USSR from 1963 1981 and under license in Poland from 1964 1979 as well as in Czechoslovakia and in China as the Type 59. During the Cold War period it was felt that there was a need for a new anti-radiation system for the T-55. A new lining and full chemical filtration system were added to the tanks and these became known as the T-55A. A T-55A is distinguishable because these modifications made it necessary to enlarge the Driver s hatch and enlarge the combing over the Commander s and Loader s hatch. The new improvements brought about the removal of the bow machine gun. The coaxial machine gun was updated and room for 6 more main gun rounds (100mm) was made possible with the removal of the hull machine gun. Starting in 1970 a new turret fitting was adding to the T-55A to accommodate the new 12.7mm anti-aircraft heavy machine gun.

Hobby Master 1/72 US M10 Tank Destroyer "Duckbill" France, 1944 "Corsair II" (HG3413)

The US M10 was the most produced US tank destroyer of WWII. The British M10s were called Achilles IIC because of the modification of the main gun from a 3 inch gun to a quick-firing British 17 Pounder. The conversions took place at the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich. The Mk. IC had a diesel engine while the Mk. IIC had a gasoline engine. Even the gun of the Mk. IIC was having difficulty against the heavy armor of the German Panthers and Tigers. Gradually the M36 Jackson with its heavier armor began to take over from the M10 and Achilles.

Hobby Master 1/72 US M10 Tank Destroyer "Duckbill" Germany, June 1945 "Richelieu II" (HG3414)

The M10 made its first appearance in North Africa where it was quite successful being
able to penetrate the armor of most German tanks in the field at that time. As WWII
progressed it was realized that the M10 didn?t have the speed required to make up for its
lack of armor. As well the crew was left open to the elements and enemy gun fire. In
Normandy the M10 was coming up against the newer German Panthers and Tigers that
had thicker armor than the previous tanks. This made the M10 ineffective against the
German armor and by late 1944 the newer M36 was beginning to replace the M10. By
the end of production there were over 6,000 M10s manufactured.

Hobby Master 1/72 Centurion Mk5 IDF Shot 10th Armor Brigade Samaria West Bank Israel 1967 Tank Model (HG3507)

It wasn't long after the country of Israel was established in 1948 that the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) realized the importance of armored forces. The IDF bought any surplus WWII armor they could acquire and ended up with a very mixed inventory. Israels Arab neighbors were acquiring Soviet made T-54/55s that were superior to anything the IDF had. In 1959 the solution was to obtain the British built Centurion Mk.II that had thicker armor and offered better protection. This also allowed for the upgrade to a larger gun replacing the British 20 Pounder (83.4mm) with the British L7 105mm gun. The IDF also replaced the Commander?s 7.62mm machine gun with the U.S. built 12.7mm M2 machine gun. The Israeli?s named the modified tank the Sh'ot (whip) and when the Six Day War started in June 1967 the IDF had 385 Centurions tanks and 294 of them were the Sh'ot. During the Six Day War the IDF tanks played a major role and coordinating with other units the IDF pushed to the East Bank of the Suez and gained control of the Sinai Peninsula within 3 days. During the war Israel captured 30 of the 44 Centurion tanks owned by Jordan.

Hobby Master 1/72 Centurion Mk.lll A Squadron, 8th King's Irish Hussars, 29th Infantry Brigade, Korea 1951 (HG3508)

The Centurion entered British service in 1949 and when production ended in 1962 there had been over 4,000 vehicles of all variants produced. Approximately half of the production where exported. The Centurion was a great advancement in British tank design with them using some of the best features from other tanks around the world. The Centurion was the first main battle tank in the world to use both elevation and azimuth gun stabilization in the main gun. All Centurions had welded steel hulls and cast turrets with welded steel plates for the roof. There were about 25 different variants of the Centurion with each improving on the one before. The Mk. 5 used the same 20 pounder main gun as the Mk. 3, there was no Mk. 4 produced, but most had a Type B barrel with a fume extractor half way down the barrel. This got rid of fume low back into the turret and also eliminated the need for the counter weight used on the Type A barrel. The Mk. 5 replaced the coaxial Besa with an M1919A4 . 30 cal Browning MG and a second .30 cal MG mounted on the Commander s cupola. The switch to the .30 cal MG was to meet NATO s standardization policy. The turret rear escape hatch was eliminated. A fifth return roller was added on both sides to help prevent throwing a track. By the late 1950 s most of the problems with the Centurion were eliminated except for its slow speed and the use of gasoline as the fuel. In 1967 the Centurion was starting to be replaced by the Chieftain.

Hobby Master 1/72 JSDF M24 Chaffee Light Tank Model (HG3603)

Probably the best light tank the Allies had in WWII was the M24. Because of its light armor and weight it was quite fast and its 75mm M6 gun could deliver a large caliber shell. The M24 arrived in Europe during the latter stages of WWII and proved very reliable. More than 4,000 of these tanks were produced between 1943 and 1945. Things were different in Korea for the M24 when it came up against the T-34/85 so it was accompanied by the M26, M46 and the M4A3E8 with the 76mm barrel. When the M41 Walker Bulldog was delivered the M24 was relieved from duty with the US Forces in 1953.

Late in WWII the M24 replaced the M5 Stuart and with its 75mm main gun became one of the first US designed tanks to be able to take on the German armor. The M24 was one of the first tanks to cross the Rhine as the Allies pushed deeper into Germany. The tank was quite unique by being able to house five persons in a light tank. The designers made sure the crew were able to provide adequate self-defense by providing two 7.62mm machine guns, one anti-aircraft 12.7mm heavy machine gun and 51mm smoke grenade-launchers. There were over 4,000 M24s built and because of its speed, agility and reliability over 30 countries added them to their arsenal well into the 1970s. This tank would prove to be more than adequate during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Hobby Master 1/72 German Cargo Truck 1 Panzer Division, Early Spring 1940 "Fuel Transporter" (HG3908)

These trucks started out as a two-wheel drive vehicle and eventually evolved into four- wheel drive. The 4X2 vehicles were designated Type S (S- Standard) and the 4X4 were designated Type A (A- Allradentrieb or All Wheel Drive). From 1937 to 1944 there 127 sub-variants produced with the 4X4 going into production in 1940. By simply changing the body these trucks became cargo and troops transports, fire engines, fuel tenders and buses. The most important variant was the Einheitskofferansbau (house-type body) that could be used as an ambulance, radio and communication vans, work-shops on wheels, laundry or laboratory and countless other adaptations. Towards the end of WWII steel became a scarce commodity in Germany so the cabs were made from wood and pressed card that were called Ersatz . These trucks became the main cargo truck used by the Germans and appeared on every battle front. Approximately 140,000 of these trucks were manufactured in the different variants.

Hobby Master 1/72 German Cargo Truck w/20mm Flak Russia (HG3909)

Originally designed as a 4X2rear-wheel drive but in 1940 a 4-wheel design was made available and it became very much appreciated by its crew for the cross country abilities. This variant of the 3-ton was used primarily for cargo transportation but could easily be adapted to handle troops. These 3-ton trucks continued to be manufactured even when WWII was declared ended and the S type became the most used truck for German commercial transport. From1937 to 1944 approximately 82,000 of the Type were built and another 14,000 with along wheel-base and 8,300 with a low- level base.

Hobby Master 1/72 German 3-ton V-2 Rocket T-stoff Tanker (HG3910)

These 3-ton trucks had 127 variants and the T-Stoff Tanker was just one. It was originally designed as an air-field fuel bowser and the German military designated them as Kfz.385. As jet engines and rockets were developed the air-field bowser was upgraded to carry the T-Stoff that was a hydrogen peroxide based solution and was part of the fuel mixture for the Me-163 and Me-262 as well as the V-2 rockets. T-Stoff was extremely corrosive and highly dangerous. The operators had to wear special rubber gloves when fuelling the aircraft and rocket. If T-Stoff came in contact with most cloth or other combustible material it would react resulting in spontaneous combustion. If it came in contact with flesh it dissolved it. One pilot was reported as being dissolved by T-Stoff flowing into the cockpit after the aircraft crashed on take-off and inverted. For the aircraft fuel it was necessary to combine T-Stoff and C-Stoff that was a methanol-hydrazine mixture. For the V-2 it was mixed with B-Stoff an alcohol based solution. Another problem was when the T-Stoff mixed with either C-Stoff or B-Stoff the mixture became highly explosive so T-Stoff tankers weren t allowed within a half kilometer of the planes or rockets when the other ingredients were being loaded. Because of bombing and air attacks from the Allies the Germans were forced to move their rocket launches to various locations. Since most of these locations were remote it required a vehicle that could go off road and these trucks could do just that.

Hobby Master 1/72 British Quad Gun Tractor with 25 Pdr Gun. (HG4004)

Although originating in the UK, the greatest production of the Quad 4x4 Field Artillery Tractor (FAT) took place in Canada, using either a Ford V-8 or a Chevrolet V-6 power plant. The vehicles were designed to transport artillery, crews and ammunition over just about any type of terrain. Because the 25-pounder was very mobile with a good rate of fire it became the standard for British Army artillery divisions during WW II and Korea. The limber was used to transport 32 rounds of ammunition, the firing platform and other equipment that couldn't fit into the Quad.

Hobby Master 1/72 British Quad Gun Tractor with 25 Pdr Gun Gold Beach D-Day Plus 2 (HG4005)

It all started in Europe but the greatest production of the Quad 4x4 Field Artillery Tractor (FAT) took place in Canada using either a Ford V-8 or a Chevrolet V-6. These vehicles were designed to transport artillery, their crews and ammunition over just about any type of terrain. Because the 25-pounder was very mobile with a good rate of fire it became the standard for British Army artillery divisions during WW II and Korea. The limber is used to carry 32 rounds of ammunition, firing platform and other equipment that couldn?t fit into the Quad.

Hobby Master 1/72 LVT-2 AMTRAC Unknown Unit, Saipan (Marinanas Islands), June 1944 (HG4404)

A vast improvement over the LVT-1 came with the arrival of the LVT-2 commonly known as the Water Buffalo and also as just the Buffalo . The new machine was provided with better armor, a newer Continental engine and the same transmission found in M3A1 Stuart tanks all riding on a new suspension. This made it possible for the LVT-2 to carry 6,500 pounds, 2,000 pounds more than the LVT-1. The one flaw with the LVT-2 was the bilge powers were powered by gasoline so when the gasoline ran out the LVT-2 usually foundered. The LVT-2 was manufactured from 1942 until 1945.

Hobby Master 1/72 M5A1 US Light Tank E Tank Company, 83rd Recon Battalion, 3rd Armoured Division "Victory" (HG4901)

With the German victories in Europe using mobile firepower the development of light tanks became a priority. In early 1942 the GMC Cadillac Division developed the M5 series called the Stuart by the British. By September 1942 the improved M5A1 was developed. Originally equipped with a .30 caliber anti-aircraft machine gun most tank crews upgraded to the .50 caliber machine gun. In Europe the Stuart proved too ineffective against the larger German AFV s making it an easy target. The M5A1 proved adequate in the Pacific against Japanese armor.

Hobby Master 1/72 US M8 HMC European Front, WWII (HG4910)

The U.S. military had requested a light close-support vehicle so a standard M5 with the turret removed was tested. A new open-top turret was installed, the Driver and Co-driver were moved forward to accommodate a larger turret and with limited space in the vehicle the chassis was modified to tow an armored ammunition trailer. The M8 was the first American fully tracked Self Propelled Howitzer with 1,778 vehicles being produced between September 1942 and January 1944. The M8 was gradually replaced by the M4 Sherman with 105mm Howitzers.

Hobby Master 1/72 Sd. Kfz. 7 German 8 Ton Half-Track Luftwaffe Air-Borne Tank Division, Summer 1941, Eastern Front (HG5001)

The concept for the Sd.Kfz. 7 dates back to 1934 when the need for this type of vehicle was realized. It wasn?t until 1938 before the first vehicle actually left the factory. The vehicle had theater-type bench seats capable of carrying up to 12 men. There was stowage room at the rear for ammunition for the large guns it usually towed. These vehicles required a lot of maintenance and were prone to tracks breaking. The on road speed wasn?t very good but it off-road abilities made up for it.

Hobby Master 1/72 Sd. Kfz.11 German 3-Ton Half-Track Unit Unkown, Poland "WH-133669" (HG5101)

Borgward was tasked to design a 3 ton towing vehicle. The prototype was ready in 1933 but it only had a 72 HP engine and four road-wheels per side. The second prototype wasn?t any better so in 1938 the project was given to Hanomag. The company added two more road- wheels per side, changed the transmission and gave it a 100 HP engine. The demand was so great that 5 more companies were added to the production of the Sd.Kfz.11. Between 1937 and 1945 25,000 vehicles were produced in 5 variants.

Hobby Master 1/72 M18 Hellcat Tank Destroyer 3A-705TD, 1944 "Battle Of Bulge" (HG6001)

The 76 mm M18 tank destroyer was produced by General Motors Buick Division who named the M18 the "Hellcat". The M18 was the fastest tracked AFV of WWII reaching speeds up to 60 mph. The speed was possible because of the lack of heavy armor. The theory was speed would be the vehicles protection. Quite often German Panthers and Tigers would fall victim to the M18 because the German tanks turret couldn?t turn fast enough to return fire. The M18 was also present in the war in the Pacific.

Hobby Master 1/72 JS-2 Russian Heavy Tank 7th Independent Guards Heavy Tank Brigade, Red Army, Berlin, 1945 (HG7001)

The JS tanks were named after Joseph Stalin. The JS-2 had a 122mm D-25T main gun and 6 road wheels to improve soft ground track performance. In 1944 new specifications included new armour tempering, a 60-degree glacis replaced the 30-degree and the driver?s front hatch was removed. Also a relocated wider porthole, improved mantlet, increased lower hull side armor and a new periscope sight. The commanders cupola moved to the left and a 12.7mm anti-aircraft machine gun attached. In 1944 2,250 JS-2s were produced and no further improvements were made until 1954.
