During WWII the Allies decided on one tank to be the main fighting-vehicle, the Sherman. Using one tank meant production could be greatly increased and the Sherman had already proven itself to be reliable. 76mm main gun to the 105mm howitzer. The 105mm provided the much needed destructive power against enemy strongholds such as pill boxes, bunkers and gun emplacements. In Vietnam these big guns helped route out enemy strongholds and provided much needed defensive power for the French troops. Out of the 49,234 M4’s produced 12,596 were M4A3 and about 500 were the 105mm versions.
