The US M10 was the most produced US tank destroyer of WWII. The British M10s were called Achilles IIC because of the modification of the main gun from a 3 inch gun to a quick-firing British 17 Pounder. The conversions took place at the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich. The Mk. IC had a diesel engine while the Mk. IIC had a gasoline engine. Even the gun of the Mk. IIC was having difficulty against the heavy armor of the German Panthers and Tigers. Gradually the M36 Jackson with its heavier armor began to take over from the M10 and Achilles. In China after WWII there was a civil war with the Kuomintang (KMT) moving from mainland China to Taiwan but claiming control over all of China. While on the mainland the Communist Peoples Republic of China (PRC) claimed control of all of China including Taiwan. Fighting between the two parties went on for years and culminated with heavy shelling and bombardment of Jinmen (Kinmen) Island. The island was only about 5 or 6 miles from the mainland so it became the focus of the assaults. There even were blockades to try to stop re-supply of the island with troops and machinery. In September into October 1958 there were 40 straight days of shelling the island. After this the PRC decided to re-exam this approach and decided it wasn t worth the possibility of getting the US involved. Throughout this period one of the ROC weapons of choice was the M10.
