After WWII Russia began mass production of their T-54/55 tanks. It carried an impressive 100mm main gun on a low silhouette with a turret designed for maximum protection. It also has a very distinctive space between the first and second road wheels. The T-55A version has anti-radiation capabilities plus a few minor improvements. Production also took place in Czechoslovakia, Poland and China (model T-59) with approximately 95,000 tanks of all variants being produced. The T-55 has been used in over 40 countries and after almost 50 years many are still in use. In October 1973 the Syrian Army along with the Egyptian Military launched a two-sided attack against Israel. This invasion would become known as the Yom Kippur War . Syria was well equipped with Soviet made armoured vehicles that included over 2,000 T-55 Main Battle Tanks. Syria attacked Israel through the Golan Heights and was stopped by the up-gunned Shermans and Centurions of the IDF. The battles that took place were the largest since 1943 at Kursk. The Israelis captured over 1,000 Syrian and Egyptian T-55s in the 1967 and 1973 wars.
