In January 1943 the German 19th Panzer Division was involved in battles at Starobjelsk, Millerovo followed by Donez, Kharkov from February until March. In July and August they fought at Kursk and managed to escape being encircled. They joined the Panzergrenadier Division Grossdeutschland and fought several other battles sustaining heavy losses. The Sd.Kfz.222 played a vital role in reconnaissance on the Eastern Front.
