The U.S. Army 2nd Armored Division “Hell On Wheels” took part in Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily. The division hit the beaches on July 10, 1943 at the Battle of Gela in support of the 1st Infantry Division. On July 21, 1943 the division landed at Licata, Sicily this time in support of the 3rd Infantry Division and then fought their way to Palermo. The battle for Sicily lasted until August 17, 1943 and was the opening of the invasion of Italy.
