In December 1944 Budapest Hungary was held by German and Hungarian troops. On December 29, 1944 the Soviets forces encircled the city in an attempt to recaptured Budapest. The LSSAH was part of the reinforcements that arrived a few days before Budapest was finally taken by Soviet forces on February 13, 1945. After several attacks and counter-attacks the city fell and only a small percentage of Axis troops managed to escape using darkness and heavy fog to hide them.
