Navis Neptun 1218 IJN Kaga, the former Battleship in her final Aircraft Carrier configuration, 1939 1/1250
Kaga was one of the first fleet carriers for the Japanese Navy. She first entered service with three flight decks and looked like a larger version of HMS Furious butwas modified to have a large flight deck extending all the way from the bow to the stern of her hull by the time that the attack on Pearl Harbor took place. The large air group of monoplane fighters, bombers and torpedo planes made her one of the most potent carriers in the world. The result was triumph at Pearl Harbor but disaster at Midway just a few months later because of weaknesses in the design.
The Japanese had decided to convert two Battlecruisers to Carriers (Akagi & Amagi) after the Washington Treaty. The hull of Amagi was destroyed in an earthquake, so Kaga (a Tosa class Battleship) was converted instead. Although she was always slower than the other Fleet Carriers, she was tough and took longest to sink at Midway!
