NREA Spotters Companion 2011 (33rd edition)

The National Railway Enthusiasts Association have been publishing a companion guide to British mainline locomotives, multiple units and passenger coaches for many years.

This 33rd edition contains a full listing of all locomotives, multiple unit trains and passenger coaches registered for use with Network Rail at the begining of March 2011.

A true pocket-sized book the spotters companion A6 sized spotters companion conatins 136 pages and is just 1 centimetre thick, less than half an inch, which can easily carried in a jacket pocket while travelling.

To keep the thickness down information which is readily available elsewhere is left out, paring the spotters companion down to listing the key data for locomotive classes together with locomotive number, operater details, shed allocation, name and any specific detail differences between class members. Data for multiple units covers the unit number, shed allocation and formation car numbers, while the small remaining number of hauled passenger coaches, even including HST stock, are listed with number and shed allocation together with any previous number for rebuilt/renumbered vehicles and detail variation from similar coaches.

Preserved coaches which operate on the national network are also listed, including coaches used by heritage railways operating over Network rail tracks and steam locomotive support coaches. The book is concluded with a listing of service stock, barrier and breakdown equipment carrier coaches.

A complete listing of diesel multiple unit trains and unit formations, as registered with Network Rail in late 2011. The book covers all diesel powered unit trains from the 4-wheel railbus types, conventional and second generation units to the Voyager and Meridian units.

Details of trains, train formations and individual vehicle types are given, along with equipment changes from the standard fittings. The livery, owner and operator of each train are supplied, indicating in which areas each unit is most likely to be operating.

Due to the rationalisation of trains and services in recent years this book is now able to accomodate details of on-track mantenance plant, including tampers, ballast cleaners and regulators, track relaying cranes, the Windhof general purpose units and snowploughs.

Platform 5 Preserved British Railways Locomotives and Multiple Units 14th edition (PRES 14)

An excellent reference book for Britains preserved locomotives. Each locomotive class is briefly described with principal dimensions followed by a list of the locomotives with British Railways and previous numbers where applicable, current owner or location and detailes of the bulder and date of construction.

All types of ex-mainline locomotives, steam, diesel and electric are covered, including the new construction projects currently underway. The book is completed with listings covering unit trains, including diesel and electric multiple unit stock and even two preserved trams formerly owned by BR.

Volume 14 now covers the new developments in the heritage railways scene with a list of new build and replica locomotives, plus a list of WD locomotives inmcluding the former army-owned Austerity 0-6-0 saddle tanks.
