Leipzig was stationed in the West Indies in 1914 and was due to return to Germany when she was relieved by the new cruiser Karlsruhe. Rather than going home she was sent to join von Spee's East Asiatic Squadron in the Pacific where she was used as the communication ship to keep the location of von Spee's heavy ships secret from the British who continued to assume that she was a lone vessel until both Leipzig and HMS Glasgow visited Coronel in Chile to collect mail. Leipzig missed the Battle of Coronel but she was with the East Asiatic Squadron at the Battle of the Falklands where she was sunk by HMS Glasgow & HMS Cornwall.
