ViTrains OO BR 37 201 Class 37/0 Railfreight Triple Grey Metals Sector (V2038)
The majority of the class 37s worked for the Railfreight sector, 37 201 represents one of these locomotives carrying the metals subsector markings. 37 201 worked from both Motherwell and Cardiff Canton sheds while allocated to the metals sector, with occasional passenger train duties and visits to heritage railway diesel galas.
Powered by a centrally mounted motor with flywheels in a diecast chassis drives two axles on each bogie through helical reduction gears. The bodyshell has been produced from completely new tooling designed by former Lima engineers. This shows every sign of being a top-notch model, combining the latest technology with decades of model manufacturing experience. Accurately reproduced tumblehome, bonnet shaping and end taper are complemented with flush glazing, etched windscreen wipers, etched roof fan grilles and finely moulded bodyside grille and panel detailing.

Completed in 1963 at the Vulcan Foundry as D6901 the locomotive was sent new to Cardiff Canton, but moved to Gateshead in 1967 and commenced a tour of 37 sheds including Thornaby, Healey Mills before appearing to settle for a long stay at Immingham.
Gaining the TOPS number 37 201 in 1973 the locomotive appeared at the Scottish railway preservation society gala in 1984. Entering the period modelled, 37 201 moved to Motherwell shed in 1988 joining the Railfreight metals sector locomotive pool there. In 1991 the locomotive moved via Thornaby back to South Wales and Cardiff Canton, still working for the Railfreight Metals sub-sector.
Late in 1992 the locomotive changed to the Regional Railways passenger sector at Inverness and gained the name Saint Margaret at Dunfermline in 1993, but glory was short lived and only a few months later 37 201 was listed as stored unserviceable.
Following reinstatement the locomotive returned to engineering and freight use at Motherwell, visiting the 1994 Bo'ness & Kinneil railway diesel gala. In 1995 the loco moved to Birminghams' Bescot shed, joining the Transrail 37 fleet, but was again stored late in 1996. It would appear that this could have been the last time 37 201 was a working locomotive, the records moving it only between different store codes. Currently owned by Harry Needle Railroad Co. the loco is stored unservicable at Barrow Hill. | |
