D6971 was completed at the English Electric Vulcan Foundry plant in March 1965 and sent new to Cardiff Canton shed and the locomotive has had a long association with South wales and the western region. Renumbered 37271 in 1974 the locomotive did not move away until 1985, when it was transferred to Glasgows' Eastfield shed and fitted with electric train supply equipment during an overhaul at Crewe.

Now numbered 37418 in the ETH 37/4 series the locomotive took up duties on the scenic West Highand line to Oban, Fort William and Mallaig. Later tranferring to Inverness 37418 also worked over the North of Scotland routes to Kyle, Thurso and Wick. Named An Comunn Gaidhealach at Edinburgh in 1986 the 37418 remaining in Scotland until 1990, with use increasingly shared with the freight businesses. Moving to Immingham with Railfreight Petroluem and the name was removed early in 1991, replaced with Pectindae, but passenger use continued, with trains to Aberystwyth, Pwllheli, Blackpool and Skegness in 1991/2 before official transfer to the Regional railways sector at Crewe in 1993, working mostly on the Holyhead route.

Under shadow franchising 37418 moved to Trainload Freight West passenger pool in 1994 and the name East Lancashire Railway was fitted in April that year.

Joining the EWS fleet 37418 East Lancashire Railway entered the systemwide pool and travelled very widely on passenger duties. The locomotive returned to Scotland for Highland services and took part in the Cardiff - Rhymney shuttle services for several years around 2000.
Late in 2007 EWS' locomotive requirement review saw the 37s put on the tender list. 37418 was sold for preservation and collected by Allelys Haulage in February 2008 for secure storage and overhaul/restoration work to be undertaken.
