Stratford shed had a long history of painting locomotives in identifyable livery variations and the 37s had a long association with the former Great Eastern. The first 37, D6700/37350 was turned out in green during the late 1980s. After this locomotive was transferred away 37216 replaced it as the celebraty loco.

Released from the English Electric Vulcan Foundry palnt in January 1964, D6916 was sent new to Swansea Landore shed, spedning the first few years in South Wales. The first visit to Stratford came in 1971, and renumbering to 37216 took place in 1974.

37216 travelled widely on passenger and goods train duties, with passenger trains recorded in many parts of the country, including summer extras to west country and east coast resorts in the mid-80s. Returning to Stratford shed in 1987 the locomotive resumed duties in East Anglia.
The name 'Great Eastern' was fitted in March 1992 and 37216 was probably repainted into the heritage green livery at this time. The locomotive was then allocated to the regional railways business sector and attended several depot open days. In 1994 however 37216 returned to the freight sector with Trainload Freight South, although some passenger duties were still recorded.

No date can be located for the removal of the nameplates, however by the late 90s 37216 had been repainted again, this time into the Mainline pale blue livery before the sale of that company to EWS.

Under EWS ownership the locomotive has featured on several well-known 37 duties, including Bristol - Weymouth, Cardiff - Rhymney and Holyhead services. The run-down started in 2003 however, with transfer to the tactical reserve. Sold in May 2007, 37216 moved to the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway for an active retirement as another working exhibit in the story of the South Wales coal field.
