Hornby OO EX GWR Private Owner 0-4-0T Locomotive Railroad Range (R2878)

Based on a GWR design locomotive inteded for light railway use this shunting engine is typical fo the side tank engines used in private sidings at factories, mines, quarries and other major industrial installations.

Some of these locations had extensive rail network, sometimes offering internal passenger services to get staff around the site, an ideal use for Victorian era 4-wheel coaches.

Surprisingly this is a good model of the real Caledonian Railway 'pug', a class of small 0-4-0 saddle tank engines built for shunting in harbours, dockyards and the close-pack industrial areas.

This Hornby model has long been a favourite for younger modellers, with its attactive blue livery and will be at home in the goods yard or on a branchline as your layout grows.

A typical small shunting engine this 0-4-0 side tank is finiahed in the livery of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway. Often even these large mainline companies needed tiny shunting engine to work in awkward yards and around socks, where curves were very sharp and larger engines would be derailed.

These small 0-4-0 tank enagines are ideal for small layouts, taking up a minimum of space in goods yards or scurrying along with just a few wagons.

Joining the Hornby Railroad range later this year is this model of the LMS Patriot class express passenger 4-6-0 locomotive 5532 Illustrious in the clasisc LMS maroon livery.

Hornby OO GWR 1006 County of Cornwall Hawksworth Tender GWR Green (R2937)

The final development of G J Churchwards' 4-6-0 design family the 1000 class County developed the 2-cylinder design with a higher boiler pressure and slightly smaller diameter driving wheels. The County class did excellent work on heavy express trains over challenging routes.

Although part of the Hornby Railroad range this model was one of the first well-detailed models and, while lacking the fine detailing now found on new models, still stands alongside them. This model of 1006 County of Cornwall is painted in the post WW2 GWR Hawksworth era livery with a slab-sided Hawksworth tender.

A revised version of the Hornby 4-4-0 County class locomotive model announced as part of the Railroad range, now featuring a locomotive-mounted drive mechanism. This model of an express locomotive from the Edwardian era recalls the time when rail travel to the holiday resorts of the English riviera was coming within the reach of the working classes. The County class 4-4-0 was built as a powerful express passenger locomotive from the greatest days of the GWR.

This model of GWR 3821 County of Bedford will be finished in the GWR green livery with lettering from the post WW1 era.

Hornby OO LNER 222 Berkeley D49 Hunt Class 4-4-0 LNER Apple Green (R3062)

A revised version of the LNER D49 class 4-4-0 locomotive joining the Railroad range.

Aimed primarily at younger modellers these models feature a revised engine-mounted drive mechanism and basic detailing. This does make the model an excellent starting base for super-detailing projects.

Hornby OO LMS 1000 Midland Compound 4-4-0 (R3063)

Hornby produced a model of the powerful Midland class 4P compound 4-4-0 many years ago. Now this more basic model is joining the Railroad range, but has been upgraded to locomotive drive. Ideal for younger modellers the upgrade of the model also provides an excellent basis for superdetailing.

The 4P 4-4-0s provided an excellent 'second 11' locomotive type, easily able to haul the lighter express trains of the Midland route with plenty of power in reserve. The design even combined the stately look of the Victorian engines with the power needed by the railways in the 1920s.

Hornby OO BR Class 9F Evening Star 2-10-0 Railroad Range (R2785)

Evening Star was the last new steam locomotive built for British Railways at the former Great Western Swindon plant.

This sturdy and well proportioned model uses the older Hornby 9F tooling, producing a reliable, budget priced model that has the motor fitted in the boiler, powering the ten driving wheels, DCC Ready.

This model of LNER 4484 Falcon is painted in the LNERs' striking garter blue express passenger locomotive livery, recalling the grande days of the 1930s. Ideal for hauling the LNER teak liveried coaches.

Hornby OO BR 60163 Tornado Newly Built Class A1 4-6-2 British Railways Apple Green Railroad (R3060)

This version of Hornbys' new Tornado model features more robust detailing, ideal for younger modellers to enjoy the sight of a large express passenger engine running at high speed without risking delicate parts being broken off.
The model features the same base tooling as the more detailed collectors' model, including the motor fitted inside the boiler and a detailing pack with brake rodding, train brake pipes and lamps.

The recently built Tornado locomotive is busily employed on mainline tour trains and has been seen in most parts of Britain now, also working on several preserved heritage railways.

Hornby OO Trewavas Aggregates 0-4-0 Side Tank Locomotive Railroad Range (R2940)

A typical private owner shunting engine this 0-4-0 side tank engine is ideal for many small model railway layouts.

Decorated in an attractive red livery and lettered for Trewavas Aggregates the engine might well have been used to move wagonloads of stone between quarries and the local railway staion for collection by the mainline trains.

Hornby OO BR 40152 Class 40 1Co-Co1 Diesel Locomotive BR Blue Railroad Range (R2938)

A re-motored model from the former Lima range the huge class 40 locomotives were among the first production mainline diesel locomotives to enter service with British Railways and a member of the class appears in the Thomas the Tank Engine books.

This model shows a member of the class in the BR blue era of the 1970s and 80s when these heavy 2000bhp locomotives hauled the heavy freight trains. Several members of the class have been preserved.

Despite the compromises needed to run on sharp model railway curves Lima created an accurate model of the bodyshell, conveying the sturdy, solid look of the class 40. An excellent additon to the locomotive fleet for younger modellers, this model is still a good starting point for detailing by more experienced modellers.

Hornby OO BR D6537 Class 33 Bo-Bo Diesel Locomotive Green Livery Railroad Range (R2939)

One of the first of the Lima range the class 33 was the first British diesel locomotive model to be truly accurate, leading the way for the current generation of highly detailed models. Hornby are now remotoring the model and releasing it now as part of their Railroad range for younger modellers. It's small size and pleasing design are sure to sit well on any layout.

This model is painted in the early BR green livery, which is now carried by several of members of the class in preservation.

Hornby OO LNER 9833 J83 Class 0-6-0 Tank Engine DCC OnBoard (R3120X)

A useful 0-6-0 shunting engine painted in the black livery applied by the LNER to all classes not used for express passenger duties.
The J83 class were designed as shunting engines, but were equally at home with branchline passenger and local goods trains.

This model is supplied with a DCC decoder installed, making this engine the perfect choice to expand the motive power on a DCC controlled train set.

Hornby OO GWR 2773 Open Cab Pannier Tank 2721 Class 0-6-00PT GWR Green DCC OnBoard (R3122X)

Although one of Hornbys' older and more basically detailed models the GWR s' large fleet of pannier tanks, used for shunting, light 'pick-up' goods and branchline services has always made the 2721 class model popular.

This model of 2773 carries the open-backed cab, typical of these locomotives, dating from the turn of the 19/20th century, and the famout Great Western green livery, with initial lettering.

DCC OnBoard. This model has a factory fitted DCC decoder, ready for DCC operation. This model will also work on conventional DC control systems.
